Anyone interested in a .416 JDJ barrel?

Anyone interested in a .416 JDJ barrel? - 01/18/2005 10:51 PM

A local shop has one. I noticed it a couple of weeks ago, but the girl working there was busy & I had to run, so I was going to call for particulars & forgot until I saw the .416 Taylor article in the magazine today.
It's stainless & magnaported, & they said it's a SSK manafactured barrel(she's not sure on length). She's also not sure if it's Contender or Encore, & I wouldn't know the difference if it's not apperent(never messed with encores). This is what the consignment sheet says.
.416 JDJ, barrel # 3. Fits TC action. Includes mounted 2x Leopold, RCBS dies, & a box of ammo.
The guy is asking $320.00, & sales tax is 2% I believe.
If anyone is SERIOUSLY interested, I'll be glad to help you on it in any way I can.
Please don't send me messing around if you're just curious.

Vance, it's an Encore round off the '06 case. Blown out straight, short neck and a 60 degree shoulder. Gosh, if I didn't have 1 too many irons in the fire......That is an incredible price. Someone had better jump on it....to at least save me!!!

Interested, you've got mail.

A 416 JDJ is a 444 Marlin case necked down. A 416-06 JDJ is a 30-06 case blown out with the shoulder moved forward with a 60 degree shoulder.
Which is it boys?

SSK does a .416 on the 350 Remington Mag also. I'm not sure they have a name for it though.

Re: Anyone interested in a .416 JDJ barrel? - 01/19/2005 4:09 PM

Thanks for clearing that up Meplat. As I said, I've only seen it thru the glass case, & the lady working at the store is pretty uninformed(almost as bad as me ). She says the consignment sheet says "416 JDJ barrel # 3", so I assume it's a 416 JDJ, but I know nothing about that round.
It makes sence that it would be on the .444 Marlin case like the other large JDJs for the Contender. I assume that the '06 version was for the Encore?
I'll call today & see what the brass is, & maybe that will clear it up.
Another stupid question. What are the easy to see differences between a Contender barrel, & an Encore barrel. I've messed with Contenders a fair amount, but I've never picked up an Encore barrel(or complete gun), so I'm ignorant there. Anything on SSK(or TC) barrels that shows me the difference without a micrometer?
Oosk, I tried replying to the email you gave me, but they both came back undeliverable.
Contact me again, & I'll talk to them in the meentime.

I know as soon as I write this someone will argue with me on it but hear goes.
Contender barrels are smaller in diameter at the breech .805". Narrower Lug .497". Lug shorter .2.170. Pin hole smaller .375".
In other words the Encore barrel won't fit nto a contender frame.
Encore barrel dia .997". Lug width .620". Lug length 2.505". pin hole .437".
Can tell the difference just by looking at them.
Oh yes it is asways a good idea in my humble opinion when ever someone has a question about a certain product it is better to go to the maker of that product to find out the information on it.
Kinda like SSK ask SSK, etc. That way if the wrong info is given that it goes back to the rightful party.
Course that is just what I've found.

Thanks Meplat. You're right, that much dimensional difference, especially on the lug, will be obvious.
The lady at the shop said there is brass, so that should settle the parent case question.

Shawn, osok is in line in front of you, but if he changes his mind I'll keep you posted.
Osok, the store girl didn't have the brass there, the consigner has it, so I followed MePlat's advice & called JD. I told him it said .416 JDJ barrel #3, & he said it's an Encore barrel based on the '06 case(actually he said 35 Whelen brass works better).
I'll get down there asap & get a couple of digital pics & look it over good.
Make sure one of you guys gets it!

Re: Anyone interested in a .416 JDJ barrel? - 01/20/2005 2:21 AM

Vance. Glad you called Mr Jones. The 416 JDJ kinda throws one a curve as my 375-06 barrel is marked 375-06 not 375 JDJ #1,2,3 etc. just SSK 375-06.
One would think that he would mark the 416 based on the '06 case the same way.
See what I mean by going to the right source instead of asking the internet world at large a question about technical situations.
But what do I know?

Re: Anyone interested in a .416 JDJ barrel? - 01/20/2005 6:08 AM

You are gracious as always MePlat, but you might notice, I never asked anyone but the sales person for any information about the cartridge, I simply stated how it was marked & if anyone was interested.
You are right, his marking system does seem a bit confusing on this one, with the barrel #1, barrel #2, etc., & .416-'06, 416 JDJ, .416-350 Rem mag would make way more sense.
Thanks again for the help on Encore vs. Contender barrels..

Vance, does the barrel have the forend studs..? The Encore barrels are just drilled.

Re: Anyone interested in a .416 JDJ barrel? - 01/20/2005 10:47 PM

OK guys, I finaly got to the shop & checked the barrel out in person. Here's what I found.
First off, the barrel is marked just as I was told, & as I told JD. It says 416 JDJ #3.
Unfortunately, it seems even JD must be a little confused by these markings. He said it was an Encore barrel based on the '06 case.
Well I got to look at the brass(turns out it was at the store), & it turns out it's based on the .444 Marlin brass, & after looking at the barrel, it is obviously a Contender barrel. The lug is identical to my Contenders(thanks for the dimensions MePlat - that made it easy, & thanks Encoredude, it has two short lugs in dovetails just like a 14" Contender). Guess sometimes going to the sourse doesn't even help.
It is an SSK Barrel, either stainless or coated to look that way, 14", Mag-na-ported, with a SSK Weaver style base(also stainless), a pair of inexpensive looking vertically split rings, & a 2x Leopold that doesn't look beat, but does have some scratches. Comes with RCBS dies, & a box with 19 pieces of brass & one loaded rd., but I don't think they can mail the loaded rd.
If someone is interested, I can email them a couple of pics & give them the dealers phone #. He said he'd deal with them directly on the phone & ship for them at the buyers cost.
If osak is still interested he's still got first choice, & then the other's that mentioned being interested in order.
Hope someone can use this.

osok will pass on this one. 444 doesn't burn enough powder. Still a bargain for someone. $423 just for new barrel,$125 magna port + scope + mount + dies. Next in line....

Thanks for the effort Vance.

Re: Anyone interested in a .416 JDJ barrel? - 01/21/2005 12:18 AM

OK Shawn, I guess it's in your court if you're looking for a Contender barrel.
If I had the funds I might be interested myself, but I can't imagine it could do much my .444 Marlin barrel can't.
Would still be fun.
Anyone have any ballistics on this beast?

Re: Anyone interested in a .416 JDJ barrel? - 01/21/2005 6:13 AM

Vance, having once owned a .411 JDJ I think you want to latch onto this one for yourself (if it wasn't already spoken for I would - that price is a hell of a deal). It would be a real moose stomper. You would get better sectional density for deeper penetration with better variety of bullets for BIG game than with the .444. I also think it would be (at least theoretically) more accurate because of the slight shoulder.

Think I got something like 2200 with 240 gr. bullets out of the .411 JDJ - basically it will push about the same weight the same speed as a .375 JDJ.

Re: Anyone interested in a .416 JDJ barrel? - 01/21/2005 6:23 AM

I really wish I could Rob. A guy can't have too many barrels, but the bucks just aren't there right now.
It does sound like a good cartridge though, & I'm sure it would make a great moose/big bear round. Right now I'm getting around 2110 out of a 270 in the .444 with no pressure signs, & still 1.7 gr to go to max according to Accurate Arms tech guys. I may push it a bit further, but it's shooting nice right now.
Shawn, I haven't received an email yet.

Shawn, glad to hear it made it & was what you expected. Also glad the shop was good to deal with.
It's nice when you can pass a good deal on to someone else.
If I can't have it I want one of you guys to so I can shoot it vicariously thru you!!! Now you have to keep us posted on performance & load development. And, when you kill the first big game animal with it, you need to invite me to the BBQ.
