call the shot - 01/07/2012 8:19 PM

Using the single blade of grass that`s across the foward right leg as a reference point, where would you place your shot??
This is a big boar. What bullet?

Re: call the shot - 01/07/2012 8:47 PM

I don't know hogs from dogs, but if within 25 yards I'm gonna try to put it in his ear. Otherwise slightly ahead of the Y of his front legs and about halfway up the bod with a 325 XTP from 480R SRH.

If I know I am going HOG hunting I might load up some 400's, but all I got is 325's.

Re: call the shot - 01/07/2012 8:56 PM

Right behind the ear! Works everytime. Don't have to track them that way.

Re: call the shot - 01/07/2012 9:53 PM

So far two head shots....

Re: call the shot - 01/07/2012 10:27 PM

James, I would say 2" up and 2" back from the end of the grass. 44mag 300gr wfngc at 1325 fps out of a ruger sbhh and I'd wait until he took one more step..

Re: call the shot - 01/07/2012 10:42 PM

With my 44 mag, I'm goin' directly above the elbow joint with a 300 gr. hard cast.

Re: call the shot - 01/07/2012 11:01 PM

I'm a fan of the head shot also. If I wanted to shoot in the body it would be about Two inches directly behind the tip of that blade of grass. Probably a 300 gr wnfp. The base of the ear really is the money shot on hogs regardless of how big they are. 22 mag on up will do it.

Re: call the shot - 01/07/2012 11:12 PM

Top of the blade of grass about 6 in. back using a 454 with a 240 gr. XTP mag.

Bang! Bang! Bang-Bang! Weeeeeee! Weeeeeeee!

Re: call the shot - 01/07/2012 11:33 PM

Hi shoulder -- break him down. 500 grain LFN at 1,100 fps.......dead boar!
Posted By: Franchise

Re: call the shot - 01/07/2012 11:59 PM

Square on the shoulder w/ 300 gr. RN out of my 376 Steyr. I've have a few rounds that would really destroy the head w/ a head shot. I'm a head shot fan with something like a 223, but body shots with bigger rounds.

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 12:23 AM

I like the Whitworth and Franchise choices: break that shoulder, the higher the better. Freedom Arms .500 WE with a 425 grain cast LFNPB at 1100 fps.

As far as hogs go, I have only shot one big ol' Black Russian Boar with a wildcat .44 Rhino (anybody else ever hear of it?) but I bet this one won't go far with that shot.

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 12:46 AM

Right over the front leg, using my 480 ruger with a 325 gr. hard cast.

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 12:49 AM

Below the ear to about eye level...night, night little piggy! Has been effective for me from 22LR on up.

However for the purposes of this exercise, I'll send a 260 Partition from my Casull, a 325 gr GDSP outta the Linebaugh, or a 350 gr XTP-Mag out of the .500WE about a couple inches straight up from the tip of the blade of grass. He won't make it out of sight.

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 3:20 AM

Purposely didn't read any responses prior to posting. Height level with the tip of the blade of grass and wind age between the two front legs
Posted By: wapitirod

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 3:47 AM

4-6" back from the tip of the grass at the same level with a 300gr XTP Mag out of my 454.

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 4:05 AM

Gregg, If I can remember correctly the 44 Rhino was the first lengthened 44mag to be shot out of a rebored Dan Wesson 357 Max
cylinder with the correct size barrel. Another name might be a
"pre .445"...

I believe you are quite correct, sir!

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 5:22 AM

2" back from top of grass, between the legs as they are seen in picture. Heart sits low if that's what we are going for. It will break offside. OR. Shoot high through shoulder and break him down. Either way he dies :-). Head shots can be tricky on pigs due to them always moving so I'd opt not to take that one myself. Any good heavy slug suits me fine. I think the last one I shot with a sixgun was with either a 300 wfn in a 454 or a 420 lfn in a 475.

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 2:28 PM

About 2 inches above the grass at the same angle of the grass for a head/neck shot, BUT hogs almost never stop moving, so I would try to shoot to break the offside shoulder.

That's right, they are perpetual motion machines. Not easy to get a head shot on them.

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 5:05 PM

I used to be a head shooter on deer until I miffed one and never recovered it. After that I went to strictly lungs/shoulder depending on range and angle.

like to try the .50 smokeless handgun on this one. .452 250XTP at 1925.

I seem to remember one of my pards shooting a DW 445 Super Mag backin my IMHSA days. Mid 1980ish.

Same thing ????

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 9:14 PM

level with the top of the blade of grass and right in the middle of the gap between the legs.

Looks like a neat boar so maybe want some taxidermy done with it, otherwise make a 90 degree angle by going straight back from the eye and below the ear, then it is DRT!

Would use my FA 454 Casull with 265gr Swift A-Frame handloads stuffed full of H-110

Re: call the shot - 01/08/2012 10:00 PM

To the left of the tip of the grass blade in the 'armpit' with my .45 Ruger 'Bisley' loaded with a 255gr cast 'swc', 10grs Unique, CCI 300 in a W-W case.

Re: call the shot - 01/09/2012 1:00 AM

Depends on how far but I would go with tyler on his shot placement in the picture. I would of course use the SBH with 260gr hard cast. I agree that the head shot is a great shot but at more than 35yrs I wouldnt feel comfortable taking it.

Re: call the shot - 01/10/2012 12:02 AM

Yeah Tyler's pick seems like what I would go with. I used to think headshots were safe until I botched one...I'll save those for squirrels and turkeys from here on out.

Re: call the shot - 01/10/2012 5:59 PM

He can't go anywhere if his shoulders are busted up good. I recently found an unclaimed deer (doe). I kept the skull to show people that try to convince me of head shots. It was grazed across the top exposing the brains - that deer had a long aganizing death. Also, put one out of a doe's misery a few years ago when she came to me without a jaw. Needless so say, I STRONGLY recommend against head shots. It's our responsibility to make a clean one-shot, humane kill.

Yeah pretty sure that was a typo

Re: call the shot - 01/10/2012 10:16 PM

From the tip of the grass I would center the cross hairs back a few inches and go right through both shoulders. A 260-300 grn Nosler HG Partition from a 454 should do just fine for that big boy.

Re: call the shot - 01/12/2012 4:04 AM

Yes, sorry. I strongly recommend against a head shot. Sorry for the typo!
