Anyone remember a magazine article on hunting squirrels with a scoped S&W md 27 357. I remember the writer singing the praises of down loading the 357's to 38 wadcutter levels. Once again firing up my fever to get into handgun hunting years ago. I sure wish I had kept all my magazines from my younger days.

In my younger and crazier years one of my college buddies and I used to hunt squirrels with j-frame smiths. Success was not record breaking but it did teach me to shoot. I used a square butt M36 with the 1-7/8" barrel. Still have that gun.

pamlicomike,
The late Robert Shimek wrote several articles about squirrel hunting with a Mdl. 27 in the 1980's (?).
Until this season, only the .22 LR was legal for squirrel hunting with handguns in N.C., but with the 2011-2012 season, there are no caliber or barrel length restrictions.

I do not recall the article. I used a 5 inch S&W M14 .38 and a 6.5" Ruger Blackhawk both with .38 wadcutters for squirrels. It worked well with minimal meat damage.

Yep, probably Bob Shimek. He used to post a lot of pics in the gun rags of a favorite S&W .357 revolver wearing an old small tube Bushnell scope. Compared to what we have today, those early LER scopes were like looking through a straw.

never saw the articles. Here in oregon there are areas where squirrel hunting is excellent and from what I've seen the silver grey squirrels we have out here are alot bigger than there eastern cousins or the pine squirrels we also have here in the state. Thing is squirrel hunting has never taken off here aside from plinking ground squirrels. It seems to be primarily and eastern/southern sport. I've just never really given it much thought.

For most southern boys, squirrel hunting is how many of us learned to "hunt". When I was a kid growing up in FL, fox squirels - which can easily weigh 2 or 3 lbs or more, were considered "big-game". :^)
