44 Mag Kills

Just curious how many 44 fans we have here? Post up some pics and give the gun/bullets specs. I'm working on getting some posted.

Here are a couple of photos.

Here's a hog I shot with my Bisley Hunter last year, with 320 grain Double Tap WFNs. Shot at 50 yards offhand.



Here's a hog I shot a couple of years ago with a borrowed (thanks 430man!) Ruger SBH, stoked with 300 grain Hornady XTPs. Shot was around 40 yards off a rest, if I can recall correctly.

Only way to go. I love those rounds!

I believe them to be one of the best choices for a hard cast bullet in the .44 Mag

Grizzly and Double Tap also make great cast loads.

Here's mine-Ruger Super Blackhawk, seven and a half inch barrel, polished finish,rosewood grips, with a Hi-Viz fiber optic front sight shooting Winchester 250 grain Partition Gold at 1365 fps.

I think it would be a true statement to say that I have taken more big game with a .44 Magnum handgun than with any other caliber. I've used Rugers, a T/C Contender, S&W's, and FA's, and bullet weights from 200 to 300, mostly driven by 296. Here are just a couple photos:

Im a middle of the road 44 mag guy. My SBH loves a 250gr Keith clocking out of her 7.5 inch tube at around 1100 fps. Thats a mild loading for the bullet but its what I like and my SBH loves it and it has always put down deer and hogs. Still waiting to try it on bear (havent gotten lucky enough to get a shot on one yet) and elk (havent figured out a way to rig the tag drawing in my favor). But if my past experiences are accurate then Im sure it will do the job on them too.

I just realized I've never shot any big game with the 44 but I've wasted an awful lot of ground squirrels with them. I've shot deer with the 357,4spcl and 45LC but somehow I missed using the 44 Mag.

For now, I can find pics of a couple doe antelope with iron sights.

Many, many deer, lost count. The .44 is my go to gun even though I love the .475 and .500 JRH---just because!
I never found any revolver caliber starting with "4" that I don't like.

Yeah that is great. I was always told handguns were too dangerous. It's great that he learns the responsibility at a young age.

It's all about education. He's been shoot'n since he was 4, killed his first game at 6 (squirrel) and he's first big game at 6 (deer). His first handgun kill was at 10 (squirrel) and first big game handgun kill at 11. He's now 14 and I trust him with firearms way more than some adults I've been around. It's all about how they're raised.

It really makes my day to see the young hunters out there, especially with a sixgun. I love those kinds of photo's, that young man is on his way!

yep, I'm the poster child for what the pc people say not to do with handguns. My handguns don't get put up unless my daughter has friends over which since we're in a rural area they have to be brought over. There are loaded guns from one end of my house to the other and they are accessible and my daughter (11) knows how to use them and if an intruder were to underestimate her abilities and knowledge of firearms it would be a fatal mistake. She can handle single and double action revolvers, my glock, 1911, ak's as well as all the sporting weapons in the house. I started her off early too and with my line of work there are guns everywhere but she dosn't touch unless she asks or is told. She actually has taken a big interest in my business and loves to see the customers guns when they come in. who knows, 10 years from now she may be the first female custom pistolsmith building your big bore revolvers.

Rod, that's awesome. I commend you for two things. Not being afraid to educate, but more importantly being so involved in your daughter's life. I am a Pastor and my wife is a teacher. There is such a disconnect between parents and children nowadays that it is just plain scary.

I too grew up with firearms in the house and was never tempted to monkey around with them when no adults were present as I was taught to respect them at an early age. It's all up to the parents IMO.

I had and still have loaded guns all over the place. My boys always knew to treat a gun as if it was loaded..........because the were/are!

My first few years of handgun hunting were with a Ruger SBH. I don't have any picture of any of those hunts.

About 5 years ago (give or take) I did take a doe with a 44 mag in a S&W 329

Only shot a couple does with the 44mag. Might be all I shoot with it, as I have switched to the 45lc.

Here's a fun one you may have seen before. 2010 gun season, we had had some lunch at my aunt's house for a birthday, and then some of us were going out hunting. It was unusually warm, and a couple of my younger cousins wanted to go along for a stand. I had already shot a nice buck with my Encore 7 08, and thought it would be great fun to take the kids out for their first hunt. We rounded up some extra orange, and out we went.

I purposly went to an area that no one else was hunting in, because I wasn't confident they could be quiet, and didn't want to disturb anyone else.

Well, we marched off into the woods, and found a nice log to sit on that was between a couple of well used deer trails.

I didn't really expect to see any deer. They did good being quiet at first, but at 8, and 11, it didn't last long. Pretty soon Isaac was whittling a stick, and chomping watermelon bubble gum, and Stina was eating M&Ms, and offering Isaac some.

It didn't matter, we were just out having fun on a beautiful day. Then Isaac askes to try out my grunt tube, and i say sure. He blows on it a couple times, and gives it back.

Not 5 minutes later, a nice doe is headed our way through the woods. I tell the kids to "be quiet, and plug your ears".

The doe ends up passing by about 40yrds behind us, and just as she gets even with us, I swivel around off the log onto 1 knee, line up the sights and fire.

She didn't go more than 20 yrds, and piled up. The kids were super exited, and the other hunters in our group(who got skunked that night)couldn't believe it. Guess it's better to be lucky than good!

Oh yeah, it was a 240 grn Hornady XTP. Stopped her quick, but didn't pass through. Thought that was odd on a lung shot, but strange things happen i guess. I like the 300s better personally.

SBhunter and wyote, to me it's common sense, spend time with your kids and take the curiousity out of the equation and it's amazing how kids will behave. I have to remind myself when other kids are around that their parents may not have taught them the same.

Ive killed 2 small whitetails with the 44.
Ive shot 44's on and off for 25 years.
It was my first magnum pistol.

I killed some really tough paper yesterday and the day before with my new SBHH Bisley. I think if it hits something it might hurt it.

I think that's a pretty safe guess! LOL!
