Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter 44 Mag 7.5" bbl - 06/14/2014 3:09 AM

Who's got one and what's your experience with it?

I'm looking at a used one that has a Leupold vx-3 2.5-8X32 scope on it for $750 and I am curious to it's effective range, etc.

I had a S&W 460 XVR for a short time (traded it for an AR and a shotgun) and shot a few deer with it and wonder how this 44 mag will compare to the S&W 460. I may regret trading off the 460?

This would be my primary deer gun during a couple of the deer seasons here in Iowa this next Dec/Jan and I'll take it with me hog hunting next Feb.

Best factory ammo to use in it for my intended usage?

Thanks for any/all replies.

my son-in-law has a pair of them, one scoped the other with open sights. both are quite accurate at 50-100 yards shooting Hornady 240gr. XTP ammo and Winchester 250gr. Supreme.

I have the Bisley Hunter. It's an easy 100 yard gun. Can't suggest any factory loads; mine are all handloads. It shoots a 300gr WFNGC cast over 19gr of H110 extremely accurate.

I have one fitted with an UltraDot. The gun has been embellished by Mag-Na-Port. Very accurate with a variety of factory ammo and makes an ideal hunting revolver. Best of luck with yours.

The 460 Mag has about double the muzzle energy of a 44mag...l would suggest you look thru all 3 Leupold EER scopes before deciding... 2.5-8 EER will likely be 550-600 new..They are out there USED tho..l was fortunate to find a 4x Leup EER used on Ebay for about half the price of a new one for my recently acquired 460PC...l really love the gun too

I have a Bisley Hunter and it fails to disappoint. Very accurate. I had it fitted with both an Ultradot 4 and an Ultradot 6.

You don't need a .460 to kill deer. The only advantage I can see with the .460 is that you can stretch the range out, but for me at least, I handgun hunt because I like to get close (among other reasons). The .44 mag is more than adequate in every sense.

Bisley Hunter topped with an Ultradot.

100 yard gun for sure....if you can do your part.
Probably about 120 max as that is where the trajectory of the 44mag starts to look more like a rainbow than a bullet.

The 44mag has more than enough legs for any deer sized game without the punishing recoil and muzzle blast of the 460.

For factory loads, I would suggest some of the quality loads from Double Tap, Buffalo Bore, or Grizzly. Premium ammo for premium accuracy. Go with hand loads if you are looking for tack driving accuracy.

Out of a 44mag, any bullet 240ish or north will be more than adequate for deer sized game. I, like KRal, prefer heavier 300ish bullets and have found they tend to be more accurate in my gun and carry energy downrange much better.

For sights, I prefer a dot sight to a scope. The illuminated aiming point and unlimited eye relief are a huge plus, and at 100 yards, you really don't need magnification to hit deer sized game.

Note: The hole on the right, through the wood, is actually the hole I use to mount my press to the bench, not an errant shot.

You got rid of your 460? How dare you!

I don't have any experience with a 44, but looking through the pictures of handgun kills, it's apparent that many of these guys here use 44 Magnums effectively on things much larger and tougher than deer, and they do it on a regular basis. I don't think you'll be under gunned.

Also, if you're looking for a good 2.5-8 power scope, try the Nikon Force XR. The one on my 460 has held up through the two years I've had it, and it's less expensive than the Leupolds.

I have both guns, both guns get used at different hunting areas, they both have Ultra Dot Match dots on them.Range and power is what you get with the 460,the 44 is no slouch, the last 2 deer I have killed with my Ruger dropped like a sack of bricks, good luck with your decision.

The SBH Hunters are great guns. I've used them to take deer, hogs, elk, zebra, wildebeest, etc. And that's a great deal with that scope on it. The scope alone will go $550.

I agree with Gary on the price it sounds like a bargain. From looking at new prices you get a ready to go package for what the gun alone will cost. If you don't like the scope, it would easily sell here or on eBay

Don't forget to watch gunbroker.com and gunsamerica.com. I've found some great deals on there.

That is a bummer that was a good price. I have been looking a new Ruger SRH and they run $900 range. Good luck.

Bisley Hunter for me. The SAA style grip just doesn't agree with me. The Bisley 44 or 45 has all the power I'd even want for any game I'd wish to take with a handgun. The gun and caliber are supremely capable. My only wish is that they would make a Bisley Hunter in 22 rimfire to match...

Yes, it's accurate enough for me. The only thing I have added was a belt mountain Keith base pin. I don't think you can expect more bang for the buck here.

Nice duo there, Inspector! I agree; one in 22lr would be a great addition.

I have a .44 Mag Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter that I would probably be willing to part with. The gun is nice but the grip style just doesn't fit my hands.

I have the same gun in 45 Colt. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I agree! I do love and prefer my Bisley Hunter over my standard Super Blackhawk.

Those are pretty guns you have there.
