Looking for Handgun scope - 09/15/2014 12:06 AM

I need a Scope that can stand the recoil of the 454 casull without paying 800$ for a Leupold. Any suggestions?

Weaver, Bushnell Elite 3200, Burris or the fixed power leoupolds. How much power do you want, need ? Fixed powers are cheaper than variables. Leoupold 2.5x8 at local store for around $600.00 new.

If you're wanting a variable, I'd suggest the Bushnell Elite; if you can't pull off a leupold. If a fixed power will do, I'd suggest a leupold. You can sometimes find a used leupold between $150-200. All leupold's have a lifetime guarantee regardless if you're the first owner or the tenth owner. I have a variable on my 454, but it never gets above 4x while hunting.

I found a Nikon Encore for my .460S&W TC Encore upon recommendation. It's supposed to be the same as the Force FX, and tough. They are a $175-200 scope.

Have yet to test it though.

Nikon Force XR

I have this scope on my 460, specifically the 2.5-8x variable version. It's withstood the abuse of hundreds of full power 460 loads, as well as a couple instances of rough handling on my part, yet it continues to maintain its zero.

I used to have scopes on my revolvers, but I have grown to prefer red dot optics like the UltraDot or Optima. If you want magnification I'd suggest a 4x, as a 2x is about like 0x to the eye. No need for a high X variable on a 100 yard gun, IMHO

Re: Looking for Handgun scope - 09/15/2014 2:35 AM

I used to be a Leupold junkie until the prices started to pass the "stupid" mark. Since I've switched to using primarily the Bushnell elites. I've used them on revolvers ranging from 454 to 500 Linebaughs in many barrel lengths and with many different loads. I've used them on T/C's from 7-30's to Encores in belted mags ranging from the 300WM to the 458 Lott and I've never had a failure. I don't shoot single shots much anymore and on my revolvers I've gone to the Millet red dots on the same revolver calibers and not had a failure with them either. You can find the Millets for under a hundred dollars if you look hard enough.

The weaver is very clear and will hold up to the 454. Not so heavy that it causes problems during recoil either. The Bushnell elite mentioned works great as well. I have various Leupolds, weavers, and Bushnell in service and they all are comparable. Just depends on your field of view needs and power requirements

I have a Bushnell elite 3200 2x-6x on my SSK Contender 358JDJ. It takes a pounding with max loaded 250 grain bullets. Great scope.

Look for a used Leupold, they have a lifetime warranty, also Burris makes a quality scope.

Personally, I've had more problems with Burris than all the others combined over the years and their customer service has never been one to write home about. I sent one particular scope in that actually can back worse. It looked like it had been dropped on a concrete floor and had dings/dents in both the objective bell and the elevation turret cap and you couldn't tighten down the turret cover all the way without It adjusting the turret. The dings and that were not related. Also had crosshairs start to turn at a diagonal and saw a fellow board members scope do the same thing this last June. I don't buy Burris anymore.

So far the Nikon Encore 2x (Force) is holding true on my .460 but those cheap little lens covers it came with aren't. On the second fired shot the rear flip-up sheared off.

Like the scope though.

I added the Bushnell Elite to my Ruger 454 and have not had a single issue. Though the field of view could be better.

If you watch the classifieds you can occasionaly pick up a used scope at a very reasonable price. I just bought a used 4x Leupold for $100.00 with perfect glass.

Re: Looking for Handgun scope - 10/05/2014 3:20 AM

I have Leupold scopes on almost all of my handguns and long guns (the only exceptions are a TC 2.5-7 on a Ruger Mk II and a Trijicon red-dot on a SBH). Most are Vari-X II/III's or VX II/III's.

I've bought more than half of these used. Surprisingly, the only time I've had to return a scope for service was a recently-made VX I shotgun scope with very little use that I bought new, and had fogged up while sitting in the safe.
