10 mm for Black Bear over bait? - 10/01/2017 8:56 PM

Hey fellas, I'm looking for info on using the 10 mm for Maine Black Bear over bait. I m running a Glock G40 MOS 10mm and a reflexive sight.

Some of my 180 gr xtp loads are hitting 1350 fps and my 200 gr 200 xtp loads are about 1250 fps.

Thanks for any help.

The 10 is similar in performance to the 357, and I wouldn't be afraid to use the 357 on blackies inside of 50 yards. It's all about placement.

I haven't shot a bear or shot xtp bullets, but I have shot some 10mm with a focus on mono metals. I would just make sure the bullet would hold together and do its job on a big bear. Seems like xtp bullets have mixed reputations, but I don't know anything about the 10mm version.

I don't know either. Most I've done is shoot the xtp into some media at 20 yards and it expanded correctly. With that said I have some Noslers on the way in 200 gr. Going to see what happens. My plan right now is to deer hunt with it this season. I plain love the Pistol. I actually got rid of my 44 mag in favor of the G40 10 mm for my all purpose gun.

I'll be over bait in Maine next year, so I have some time to dial it in. There are some big bears where I go. But for the most part 100- 200 lbs bears are more the norm. Avg bear is about 140 lbs.

My 358 win will probably be with me just in case!

Any more feed back would be appreciated

Thanks

Although I've never used a 10mm on bears I wouldn't have any problem doing it from a tree stand situation with good bullets. I'm sure you will be fine. I would use a good jacketed bullet that would give me an exit on a broadside shot & there are many good jacketed bullets out there. If I were planning on breaking big shoulder bones then I would use a heavy cast bullet in place of the jacketed. Good luck on your hunt.
If you go very high in the tree your angle changes & you need to know that it will be quite difficult to break both shoulders. Shot placement is always key.

Hey Thanks. Yeah last time I was up there I was on a good set up only about 12' off the ground. Shot a 200 lbs at about 25 yards. I was using my 30-06 with a 180 gr bullet I loaded way down to about 2400 fps. Basically it was a bang flop. I double lunged the bear he only went 15 yards and expired quickly. Bullet never slowed down but showed good expansion by the looks of the exit hole. Basically why I shoot a 358 win now. More frontal area than speed and 200 gr bullets. In the woods speed don't mean much lol. Big reason I like my 10mm. Good frontal area moving at a decent clip! Should have my 200 gr Noslers here Wednesday for the 10 mm
