44mag to 45 colt - 01/11/2006 1:28 AM

Ruger doesn't offer the Redhawk anymore in 45 colt. So I was thinking about getting a 44 mag and haveing it rechambered to 45 colt. My questions are: Is this possible without having to use a new barrel and/or cylinder? If so any gunsmiths that are known for doing this? I was thinking about calling Alpha precision.

Thanks guys.

There's a Redhawk 45 Colt over at Guns America for sale right now.

Sure would be cheaper than what you had in mind. Heck, it even comes with a Burris scope.

.45 Colt will require BOTH a new cylinder and barrel. Unless there's something magic about .45 Colt for you, I'd get a .44 Mag and leave it alone as it is more versatile in its current configuration. Load down to .44 Special velocities and basically have a Colt equivalent. Load up to whatever level you wish for real Magnum performance.

if your set on a 45 cal redhawk then you could just spend a little extra and get the super in 454, that way if you are ever hunting in a situation where you need the extra power you got it, otherwise just shoot the 45 colt loads out of it.

the 45 colt when loaded to its full potential is a beast ,when mated with a strong built six shooter!the 45 can duplicate the 44 special, then duplicate the 44 magnum then keep going ...
with some of the factory loadings out there the old 45 long colt may seem on its death bed...but handload it or run some cor-bon or other top shelf ammo through it and it is a top performer!
i dont think i would pay to convert a redhawk to a 45 long colt, but i WOULD NOT overlook it either if one was found!....jim257...(like my .45 lc )

Hamilton Bowen does this conversion if Alpha Precision doesn't. You may also want to talk to Dave Clements. Both guys have websites and do excellent work.

Thanks all. I don't want a 44mag or a 454, and while I wouldn't mind a used gun I cannot find one locally and I will not buy one off the internet. I realize the expense, but when you gotta have it you gotta have it.
