Camera Tripods for shooting sticks?

Camera Tripods for shooting sticks? - 02/28/2006 6:52 AM

I have been looking around for a decent price on a bi-pod or more so a tri-pod for shooting/hunting.
Something like a Stoney Point Pole Cat or simular, not a forend mounted bi-pod.

The prices are crazy IMHO for something new. Up near $90+ for a nice Stoney Point with tri-pod kit...

I was wondering how many folks out there have used and camera/video cam tri-pod inplace of those high priced hunting rigs mentioned above?

Seems to me it would be a decent platform to shoot from if you fit it with some sort of flat or U shaped plate via the screw that most have on top.
It would be highly adjustable from kneeing, sitting, to standing, and sturdy being a tri-pod, even on uneven ground. Pretty light weight on some of the aluminium types.
You could even attach a small sling faily easy if you needed.
It would be perfect for ground blinds or box stands for sure.

Anyone think I am out there or does this hold some merit?

I just saw a nice aluminium tri-pod on Ebay, black in color, height adjustable to 52", packs down to 14", with carry case for only $15 shipping included.
New not used!
I may buy this a fit it with a small flat plate screwed to the top, piece of rubber added of coarse for obvious reasons...

Call me cheap but I think this would work just as good, if not better, then some of the tri-pods they sell for this purpose AND be a lot more affordable.

I don't see why it would not work...I've used something very similar for shooting groundhogs. I got my Stoney Point Tripod for cheap...damaged at Cabela's and just had to buy at extra leg...but I still have about $45 in it. I'm cheap also...but when I whipped it into action for a youth hunter to shoot his first deer...it was well worth the cost.

if the threads are the same, the "v" on the stoney point monopods unscrew off and may screw right on to the tripod you will have. i'm sure i've seen just the "v" for sale by itself somewhere...maybe cabela's, midway??? not sure...if i find it, i will let you know.

Bisleyfan is right---I just tried one of my V rests from my Stoney Points and it fits the threads on my camera tripod and my Spotting scope tripod. Also fits my window mount although most states dont permit shooting from inside your vehicle. FYI

What is this "V" thingy?
I was thinking of ways to fit a plate or something to the top of the tri-pod but this sounds better.
Thanks a bunch.

BTW I bought the tri-pod last night and I can't wait to test it out!
