It's getting close!!! - 08/07/2006 4:43 PM

Just got an e-mail from the 'smith that is working one of my XP's into a monster 7mm-270WSM. The 'smith is Kirby Allen of Allen Precision Shooting...he's mentioned by Mark Hampton in the latest issue of Handgun Hunter Magazine--Fall 2005. Looks like I'm in about a two week window for delivery...SWEET!!! He said seven months for delivery but it looks like he'll be a month sooner than expected...YYIIPEEEEEE!!!

Jimmylee...you wanted to see the big dog bark! Want to plan a range day toward the end of the month...like the 27th??

Dan,
Glad to hear it is almost in your hands. Sleep may get a little difficult soon
Wished I was there to see the smile on your face after you send the first round.

Just remember that RL tends to be more temp sensitive than the Extreme line from Hodgdon.
So, when you coming elk hunting with us....

I had a wsm 270 rifle I traded it for my 44mag. I couldn’t imagine shooting that round in a pistol.
I’d like to see video of that.
I got some (abt 20 or so ) wsm 270 rounds. If you’re interested. Not sure how to ship live ammo though

Thanks...but my chamber is cut for Norma brass. This will be a pretty serious gun used for special occassions so I'll stick to just using the Norma. Thanks though.

Gonna have to postpone the test shooting date for the new beast...dang it! The smith ran into some bad weather for a few days and did not get to test shooting the XP-100 until Monday. Being the stickler for detail that he is, the weather had to be right (no rain or wind) before he would test it...which is fine by me. The test shoot went excellent according to his report!

Steve and Ernie...Kirby even reports that the 9" twist Lilja is stabilizing the whopping 200gr WC ULD's!! Reports w/ Retumbo indicate that it will pile them into much less than sub-MOA at 100yds. So he threw a few in the box for me to try once it arrives. How much are those bullets costing anyhow? Everyone at LRH loves them but no one ever mentions a price.

But now it is eastward bound and scheduled for delivery on Aug 29. That leaves me an entire two days (Aug 31 and Sept 1) to break in the barrel and get load work started as I'm scheduled to do some crop damage work on deer over the holiday weekend! hehe!

Dan, I can't wait to see that beauty. I bet it will be a shooter. I have been pondering about a new XP. I have been saving a new XP100 midgrip in 7BR for a custom pistol one of these days. I just haven't figured out the caliber or cartridge. Keep us informed on your progress and success on the crop damage hunt.

I knew the 9T would stabilize the 200 WC in rifle length barrels of similar capacity, but it is good to know it stabilizes in a 9T 7WSM SP. you may actaully get a tad more velocity since you are using a slower twist and being on the verge of stabilization. I am also curious to see if at your lower elevations if it stabilzes for you. I hope it does.
Did he mention the MV's he was getting witht he 200's?
I'm excited for you.
I would use Kirby's loads as starting point for your hunting.
Here is a couple of sites that will give you cost of the WC's

I think the reason that 200's BC is so high is it's weight. It doesn't look to the eye that it has any more of a streamlined design relative to the big 180 VLD's, except for the rebated BT. That may be the reason it also stabilizes in the 9 twists. I don't know exactly what the ogive is tho.

I'm interested to see what role the altitude will have in the 200gr'ers stabilization. I'm only at 1600'...not sure how high Kirby is in Fort Shaw, MT.

After Wednesday of next week...I'll be useless for three or four days. All I'll be doing is loading and running back and forth to the range getting a load worked for the deer damage hunt. I think we have something like 30 tags that can be filled!!

Kirby is probably somewhere around 3,500-3,800, over double of what you are.

If the 200's won't work then I'll try WC's next lighter bullet. But for now I'm going with over the counter heavy 7mm stuff as mentioned earlier.
