Impressive terminal effect from 22-250 Striker - 08/20/2006 6:10 AM

Just went out pr. doggin' 2 days ago with buddy Mitch, and his 22-250 Striker shooting the 60 JLK LD's. His load is pushing the 60 @ 3250 from the factory barrel. This bullet has a BC of .339 and is terrific for long-range shooting, BUT i didn't know what to expect for terminal effect. Mitch got set up on a dbl. just off their mound @ about 165 yds., and when he shot we saw the head of 1 of the dogs go flying away from the rest of it about 5 ft. from the dog, and he got both of them with 1 shot. The terminal effect of that bullet was impressive to say the least--about as good as i've ever seen from a bench-style bullet, and could be just the ticket for coyotes to intermediate ranges with this rig. We're gonna find out this year.

Sweet. I wonder how far they would perform like that? I've used the 50gr VM's (3350fps MV) out to 400yds on g-hogs w/ GREAT results. At 500yds they still pop a water filled jug w/ authority.

Hey KW-- i kinda screwed up here-- i made it sound like it's still avaliable, but it's not. Jimmy Knox sold the operation to Steve Mulholland (i think that's his name) @ www.swampworks.com. Steve's not gonna make any of the LD designs right now, but he said he may in the future (unless some put some pressure on him). If u can find some tho, they'll give u the best ballsitics around for their weight/barrel twist rate--

14 twist- 52 gr.- BC=.302
12 twist- 60 gr.- BC=.339
10 twist (factory 223 WSSM's)- 65gr.- BC=.395

Dan-- that is the big ?. We hope to find out soon. Here's the 500 yd. figures for like conditions--

bullet/energy/vel/10mph W/ele.

50V-Max/285/1600/6.75MOA/9.75
60JLK/505/1950/4.5/8.25

Look at the vel. figures-- 350 fps. more velocity for a 10 gr. heavier bullet started 100 fps. slower and hits almost 2X as hard. More than 10" less wind drift and 7.5" less drop-- phenomenal performance.

IMO the LD (not VLD) bullet could very well be the bullet of choice for intermediate range varminting (out to 500-600 yds), as it has a higher BC than std. weight bullets at an even lighter weight, IF terminal ballistics is there. Can u imagine the potential of these bullets at higher velocity from the 223 WSSM case? That's the niche for that cartridge IMO in a factory configuration, that is, as THE factory intermediate range 22 cal. varmint case/bullet.

I convinced a long-range shooter once to try the 52's out of his Cooper 22-250, and he couldn't believe how well it performed over his 50 Ballistic Tips.

Steve...I completely understand that BC is king! I'm planning on slinging a bunch of 162gr A-Max's from the WSM when it arrives...and hopefully they will work on deer. That .625BC is tough to beat unless I jump to a bigger VLD, the 160AB is only .531.
