Hearing protection while handgun hunting? - 10/15/2006 2:32 PM

Hey yall !- new to this site. Last Dec I killed my 1st deer with Ruger Super Redhawk 44 Mag with Bushnell Holosight. I’m am 100% hooked on this type of rock solid deer hunting setup. I’m curious what you guys use for hearing protection while hunting? As you know the 44mag is not very pleasant to shoot without hearing protection, in fact I’ve only done it the one time when downing my 7 point buck last year. Its something I do not wish to again ---ouch ! Just curious what you guys do out in the field to save your hearing?

I had the same issues when I started hunting with my 375 JDJ. I like my hearing and even though I never really "heard" the shot when I was hunting, I knew that it would do damage. I was at Cabellas and found a pair of muffs with the electronic cut-offs. I put them on and found that worked great! You could have a normal conversation in a whisper 20 feet away and then at the shot, they cut-off and protect your ears! I now wear them all the time when I am out in the field, when I start a stalk or in the stand.

I use the Walker quad power muffs and they work real well, I realized how well when I took out a crow with my 460 and forgot to put them on first

I use a pair of electronic earmuffs from Midway. The are cheap, about 24 dollars and they work very well.

I carry a set of rubber ear plugs that they issue us. They are small and easy to put in, don't have to roll them up and wait like the foam plugs. I also use my electronic ear muffs.

Muffs are the way to go up here, plugs get a bit firm at -10.

I use the cheapo plugs w/ the plastic cord between them. I loop the cord around the adjustment band of my hat and the plugs lay along the sides of my neck. Then when needed I simply slip them in and...well...usualy kill something!

I'd go electronic. I have a pair of Remington muffs and really like them, but most brands I've looked at seem good. Definitely protect your hearing...

Ordered the Peltor Tactical 7S-- should work for me -- now I'll be able to hear better and not worry about that nasty boom !! I hunt useing the summit viper ultra climber (these are great by the way ) and have a holosight on the rugger super redhawk --I rest on tree stands rail and my head is only about 12 inches or less from gun- that little dot does not move more than a mm --its rock darn solid!!!!!!

I was thinking after reading this thread that I should get some hearing protection too. I have never heard the shotgun go off, but I have shot a 357 without hearing protection, Once So I just bought a pair of Caldwell Sound-Right ES-85 Stereo Electronic Earmuffs from MidwayUSA today. They are on Sale until Tuesday for 24.99!!!
I shuld get them Monday but I won't get a chance to range test them before the sale ends. I just thought I would share with you all. I can't believe they are selling them at over half off!

I will never again shoot a gun without protection. I shot my deer last season with my 7-270 WSM/muzzle-break and the lesson, many times repeated, finally sunk in. I KNOW I have permanent hearing damage. I use a set of low profile Remington muffs that i carry with me all the time now. I'll even pass up a quick shot at game if they're not on.

I saw those as well, but after reading such mixed reviews from customers I decided to pass. Good luck with them and please let us know how they work for you. I'll stick with plain old muffs for this year, and save for a higher end of electronics for next.

Hunted a day and few evenings with the Peltor 7’s and they seem very nice. Amplified sounds do require some getting use to though. Here’s the breakdown – hope this helps “Squirrels sound like deer” “Acorns falling sound like Bombs,” “Deer, sound like hippos walking,” and what would normally be considered silent farts are in fact audible.

I went to the range on Saturday with teh Caldwell electronic muffs. I have to say they were definately worth the price. They did cut off the loud sounds as I expected, but the sound that you did hear after they shut down was a little louder than what I hear with my regular browning ear muffs. I do have to say that they shut out the sound of my shotgun and my 357 much better than the 454 and the SKS going off next to me. I suppose the direction of the mics make a difference. So for the outdoor range, I am a little disappointed, but I think they will perform well while hunting. The amplification was not as extreme as I was expecting, but it was enough to sound like Godzilla walking around the range. All in all, While I am not super impressed, I was not disappointed either. The muffs were 24.99 and for that price I am happy with them. Now I just have to see haow they do in the woods.
