375 Win in TC

375 Win in TC - 12/17/2006 8:14 AM

Does anybody shoot/hunt with the 375 Win? I've often played with the idea of getting one but never really see any info about it. Bottom line, is it used or are all the barrels converted to 375 JDJ?

If you do use it, what type of loads and ballistics do you get? Thanks.

Helluva cartridge, great short range thumper (sub-150yds) and yes, there are still used barrels available. I see them occassionally at gun shows.

I've been wanting one but know several that have them and they all love them.

I thought I read an article here some time ago on it. Might have to research the articles and see if it was. I've been thinking of one for a time, just haven't got around to it yet, but will. Great hammer for 150 yards and closer.

P.S. Yep, I thought so, it's in the Technical section. Scroll down to the 12th heading. Great read!

I have the 375 Winny in a carbine barrel and a 14 inch Hunter barrel. Love mine. Hits hard, very accurate and loading the straight wall case is a joy. Rupe

Dan, it is awesome! Your 375JDJ gives the equal performance of the Winchester in rifle configuration. SSK will tell you that was the original goal, but the 375JDJ does exceed it a little. My experience is that I think the 375Win is highly capable with the 200-225, but JDJ gets the edge because of case capacity with heavier slugs. I could be wrong. Mine is in 12" Hunter configuration. I don't use it much anymore, but it killed a big PA Doe as well as anything I have.

Bob Milek Jr. wrote an article on it in either Peterson's Hunting magazine or Gun's & Ammo (I don't remember) a couple of years ago. In the article he talks about the load developement and successfully takes an Elk with one. If you're interested I can try and dig up the article.

Here's a link to an old article that Rocky Raab wrote on the 375Win Contender for Handloader magazine.

Interesting article by Rocky. I shot a few and very few jacketed bullets. They shot pretty good for the most part. I then ran across a Lyman mold and cast up a few for this. I tried seveal different powders before I just happened to give some SR4759 a try. I forget what it was but it was in the Lyman manual an it was their accuracy load. It is no speed demon but throws them in there right at 1 1/2" at 100 on a regular basis.
Later that fall I was determined to shoot an IHMSA match with nothing but cast. The only discipline I didn't have a gun for was U. I threw on a set of Bomars, got sight settings and decided just to have fun. Shot a 39. Missed a stinking ram. A hit on ANY steel target is a guaranteed X.
I have to say I don't play with it much anymore, but it is a definate keeper for shooting CB,s. Recoil is about where a hot 357 or medium 44 falls.
It is scoped now and zeroed at 100, a deer has not volunteered to take it on as of yet.
