3rd Annual "Dan B. Invitational" is in the books! - 04/23/2007 2:14 AM
You don't have to be deceased to have an "Invitational" do you?? I hope not...think that would called a "Memorial"!!
Anyhoo...some copper slinging handgunners gathered today near Armagh, PA to test their wits ( ??) against a mighty army of yellow milk jugs! After heaps of primers were fired and mountains of powder burned...the handgunners prevailed!!
Bullelksniffer (Gerry) and his compadre Greg, jimmylee, Ed P and I threw most everything we had downrange to battle the mighty foe. And learned a few things along the way. I used mainly my .222 Rem Mag Imp XP-100 (50gr VM at 3100fps), .250 Savage Improved XP-100 (100gr SMK at 2680fps) and 7mm-270WSM XP-100(162gr A-Max at 2825fps....AKA Lil'Monster). Ed used a .221FB XP-100 and Encore .260 Rem. Jimmylee used a 22-250 Encore, Striker 7mm-08 and not sure what else. Gerry and Greg used a Striker 7mm-08, .223 (I think) and Encore .270 Win.
.....200yds is too close for milk jugs and specialty pistols!! 'cept for Gerry's Encore .270 Win...it seemed to bounce off...
.....after 200yds, the 300yds jugs were not hard at all...hot .22's, mild 7mm-08 and .260 made quick work on the jugs.
.....next was 330yds. The .222 Rem Mag Imp was still on track and shooting well. Ed and his .260 were starting to gain some ground with the holdovers. Jimmylee w/ the 7mm-08 was popping plastic. Then...Gerry...hmmm...not sure what he was shooting...but him and Greg managed to break a few along the way.
.....then came 400yds!! We all learned quickly that you should NOT stand at 400yds and let Ed shoot at you with his Encore .260 Remmy. You are fine at 300yds , but NOT at 400!! He hit on dang near every shot for about 7 rounds in a row!!
.....at 500yds we were all playing with the wind. Not sure about the other fellas...but I have a tough time aiming where there is no target!! With the 7mm-270WSM my hold was a mere 1-2" off the jug...but it's still tough to make myself do!! Gerry took a seat behind the Lil'Monster and made a first connection at 500yds. Ed took up the .250 Savage Improved XP-100 and made an awesome first shot connection with it at 500yds.
Took quite a few pics...will upload them on Wednesday. Heading to bed. Others can add details about what they learned/enjoyed as they arrive home. Later.....
