Anybody doing any hunting?

Anybody doing any hunting? - 10/28/2007 11:39 PM

Seasons are opening everywhere. Surely there have been some adventures out there by now. Spill them guys.

Our season opener In PA for turkey was yesterday. Decided to try the TC in 30 Herret in an area where center fires are legal (some areas are shotgun only). Found the turkeys but unfortunaley they were flying. I guess the shotgun would have been a better choice. Oh well, the price we pay for our sport.

our first season coastal elk starts the 10th, I already posted on deer season which was succesful. I'll spend next weekend getting the hunting rig back in shape, she had a rough time during deer season, I take my poor truck where some people wouldn't take a four wheeler, which is saying something since it's an 05 Ram 2500 heavy duty crew cab on 37s, but it has hauled out 4 deer and a badger so far this year. My truck is as much of my hunting gear as my gun, especially out here in open country where we glass from roads alot for muleys and here on the coast for dragging animals out of huge canyons, I can't climb like I used to so I keep several hundred yards of heavy rope in the rig for those rough recoveries. I still have a bear tag and a kitty tag too but I havn't had the time to get serious about hunting them this year but I still may come across one during elk season.

Archery season for deer started back on September 15th. Just haven't found the time to get out to the stand.

Rifle season starts on November 10th here in Nebraska. I plan on using my 12" 357 Maximum for deer season. This will be my second time hunting deer with a handgun. Hopefully, I will get lucky and harvest a deer with my Contender.

I'll be heading up to Illinois 2 weeks from today for the first firearm season. Some buddies just returned from the same property I will be hunting on a bow hunt and had bigtime success-- 150 in. 8 pt weighing 304 lbs, 183 in. 12 pt., 168 in. 12 pt.

I'm scared they didn't leave any for me...

Also got a whitetail doe with my 7-30 Contender

I'm still hunting deer locally and I have a trip planned to MT later on for deer.

After a long hot month of bowhunting with no good news, our Georgia gun season opened two weeks ago. Thank goodness it has cooled off. I get out at least two days a week but so far no luck.
I am carrying my T/C Contender in 7-30 Waters with a 2-6X Bushnell scope. It was a 14" and I took several deer with it the last few years but I had it chopped to 10". Accuracy is still great and it carries so much better for me. I don't think the deer will notice the little loss in muzzle velocity from the shorter barrel.
As I said it has been a little slow and I am not seeing many deer but they are there. Hopefully me and them will come together since I can stay after them until January and that is a long way off.

Good luck to those of you hunting!

Our gun season in PA doesn't open for deer till the Monday after Thankgiving. So I've been spending this week chasing the deer with the archery gear. Saw 8 different bucks this week but none were close enough or legal. (We need to have at least 4 points on one side to be legal in this part of the state.) One doe did suffer the wrath of my frustration today. Ten yards, 125gr NAP Spitfire to left rear lung, heart and right front lung lobe as it was quartering away. 25 yard tracking jobs are tough work but somebody's got to do it :.) Saving my other 2 tags for gun season. Hopefully one with the 10" 35 Herrett and one with the .44 ruger SBH.

well the truck is back together and I broke down and scoped my 6" 475, I got it sighted in today and it'll be with me next saturday morning when elk season opens. I decided for the terrain I'm hunting the increase in power over the 410GNR was more important than range, I'll let you know how it turns out.

East River Deer Season in South Dakota doesn't open until November 17th. I lucked out this year and drew a coveted Roberts County Double Tag (one Any Deer Tag and one Any Antlerless Deer Tag). South Dakota has a lottery drawing for all of their Big Game Licenses and I normally draw an Antlerless Deer Tag here in Roberts County. I think it has been like 3 or 4 years since I had an Any Deer Tag.

At any rate I have one of the guns ready a Remington Model 700 BDL Stainless-Synthetic .30-06 shooting 150gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips with 59.0grs. H-4350. I just finished sizing and polishing all the Brass for the 15" .284 Win. T/C Encore. The load for this one is one I got from XPHunter, 140gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips with H-4831SC. It is a simple matter of getting some rounds loaded and check the sight in.

Will be in Illinois next weekend for the first gun season. My favorite weekend of the year! I'll be taking the .460 to the hayfield this weekend to practice some long-range (150-175 yd)stuff but I hope it won't be needed. But, just in case...

Gun season starts tomorrow here for me. I finally got in contact with the game warden here. He said that there was a bow season that started last sat. Stock, I am used to that. And that the gun season for the military base hunting was open to modern shotgun and blackpowder RIFLE and shotgun. BUT PISTOLS ARE NOT ALLOWED. There is one good side. I really like hunting pigs. I told him that I wouldn’t pass on a nice deer, but I would just as soon shoot a pig. So Monday the game warden said he would show me around and that I needed to bring my rifle incase we saw something. He said that last time he saw over 40 animals. Mostly pigs. He also said that they were having a problem with pigs and no one wanted to hunt them. So my hopes are high. We will see how it goes.

Finally took a nice size bison with my FA 454 and Cor-Bon`s 320gr
FPPN ammo and also lucked out and finally took a turkey with a neck shot at 35yds. The turkey was very cooperative. My taxidermist did not score with his shotgun so I gave him the bird
(turkey).....JFJ

This is my first year exclusively hunting with a handgun. (during firearms season, I love to bow hunt, too) The rut is on here in North GA, but I've yet to drop the hammer.

Re: Anybody doing any hunting? - 11/21/2007 11:10 AM

Back from Illinois. According to the locals there, the rut just hasn't taken off yet and are expecting big things for the second gun season that starts 11/29 because of the full moon and temps finally due to plunge. I'll be there!

By the way, I passed on a 135 in. 8 pt. in the opening MINUTES of gun season last Fri. a.m. and only saw one other shooter next 2 days, but did take a large doe (100 yd. neck shot--straight to the ground) with my .460, with a little help from a Hornady 200 SST!
