Well I finally broke down and now I have a buffalo hunt scheduled for November 8th, wife is paying for half since next month is my birthday.

Don't know which I'll use, my 375 JDJ or my 309 JDJ. I've heard they aren't to tuff; mostly hair. If I use the 309, I'll go with the Nosler Partition and if I go with the 375, the good old Hornady 270 Spire Point.

I'll vote for your custom SBH 44 with a heavy cast bullet.
Sorry to complicate things

Congratulations! That should be a great hunt! If it were me, I would use the 375JDJ. Let us know how the hunt goes.

I've always wanted to hunt buffalo. Where are you going? Go luck and make sure you post some pictures.

There is a guy in Alabama that I hunt with that was on a green field about 2 miles back in the woods and he shot what some Alabama folks call a "Mexican Elk". It had been on that same green field for about a week and had eaten it plum to the dirt. He ate very good we have not seen any more of those on the 3000 acres since. That is about as close as you get to a Bison Hunt in Alabama. Good luck on your trip. Enjoy

Of the 2 choices you offer,I recommend you use the 375JDJ and the 270 Hornady Spire point. I've used mine on Austalian Water Buffalo with complete satisfaction. I consider the .309JDJ, excellent as it is, a bit light for my use on animals this size...but that's a personal preference.
Personally, I prefer to use revolvers, and have used the .475 Linebaugh and the .500 WE on other Buffalo in Argentina and a couple of Bison in this country. Enjoy your hunt, and the meat.

I agree with 500we on the 375 or a big bore revolver, and I don't think I'd say they aren't tuff. I had a friend take his 450 Marlin guide gun and using 400+ grain hardcast he emptied the magazine into it and the first shot was a kill shot in the vitals but he kept trucking so my buddy kept shooting.

Enjoy your hunt, buffalo is one of those animals I most want to take one day. And congrats on having what I would call a good wife!

JD,
I would use a .17 Mach IV if I were you with a 20 gr. Berger.

Just kidding, use the .375. I am sure the Hornaday's will work, but I have had one shed the jacket. Still made it to the skin on the far side of the moose, but I suspect on a body shot a bison will be a lot tougher (especially if you are going to a cold climate where hair and skin will be thick).

Good luck.
