super blackhawk hunter

checked with my dealer and going this afternoon to trade in my g20,10mm on a new sbh hunter...figured im getting back into handgun hunting...may as well do it in style!
the more i thought about it the more i wanted the sbh hunter and knowing it will be a superior hunting tool,the decision was easy to make.

one ? for those with the hunter...the rings that come with the gun...will they allow a 2x6x32 scope to be mounted without hitting anything?

I'm not sure, it all depends on the brand or actually the length. I know for sure a 2x Burris, 2x Nikon, 2.5x8 Nikon will not fit with supplied rings without removing the rear sight. I e-mailed Ruger about this issue when I bought mine and they said just send the rings back to them and they would replace with rings of my choice. I got the extra high rings and any scope will work with them...KRal

Good choice boony. I have a Simmons fixed 4x on mine and it will just fit between the sights. I tried a Bushy Elite 2-6 and it is too long, I think any variable will be too long. You have about 8-1/2" to work with. To be honest a 4x gits er dun nicely, if I am going to be in the thick bush where you might want a lower power I just take it off. It always returns to zero.

As said, Ruger will swap you rings straight up as long as they haven't been used.

you might also keep in mind if you go fixed that leupold is one of if not the shortest tube on the market and in my opinion the best although a few more bucks.

My 2-6 Bushnell Elite just fits on my Bisley Hunter.I think they give you the Med. mounts.The front of the scope is very close to front sight and you will have to have the rear cranked down. Very nice setup. Good luck it's a great hunting handgun

I have a Simmons 4x on mine and it fits great, although I may go to a 2x or back to a red dot. The 4x isn't as fast to come on target when time is important.

That creates a problem if you want to switch between scoped and irons, without time to re-sight in. IMO it is best to either get high or x-high rings or a shorter scope.

hmm who do you contact at ruger to have them swaped out? i have the same problem
but i could use the 30mm rings

I have that scope on a 'Tender 22LR, it is alnost 9-1/2" long and will also be too long to go between the sights so you will need taller rings if you don't want to mess up your iron sight zero.

Is true. You have to bottom out the rear sight on a Hunter to mount a scope w/supplied rings. Aside from that I can't see much of a reason for a variable on a 41/44/45. I used a 2X Leupold on mine & it was all that was needed. A lower power one maybe like up to 5X. Except for you ol duffers w/fading eyes! LOL

This little piece-o-happiness is wearing a 2X Weaver. My .45 Hunter model wears a newer 4X Weaver, which is about 3/8" shorter than the 2X. I just checked and both allow movement of the rear sight w/ the scope installed. So it would be no problem to zero the irons and install the scope.

Dan B. is correct but, it will depend on your gun and load. My 2x Weaver fit on mine but, when I removed the scope and zeroed my iron sights, the scope would not fit bsck properly without lowering the rear sight again. This may not be the case with all guns. I do know that all scopes will work with the ex-high mount.

My gun has plenty of room to raise the rear sight way up even with the scope installed. My scopes are set as far forward as possible in the rings w/o hitting the front sight.

I don’t know if this helps or not… but… I lowered my back sight on my SRH 6 clicks to get my scope to mount on it. Just a nice even round number for me to remember. But the truth be told, if the scope goes bad I will probably just grab my back up and tote it. I always take a spare handgun or two. I would rather do that and have confidence it what I am using. The last time I had problems with a scope not being true I was hesitant and still did not have full confidence in it after I re-zeroed it.

I wander if Ruger may have changed which rings they send with the gun? I did e-mail them about that issue when I bought mine and they said they were going to look into that issue...then again, I-DUN-NO?????

Hey Dan B., I think I may have just solved the mystery...LOL..I change out my factory sights and put the gold bead front and V-notch rear on mine. The gold bead front is a little shorted than the factory ramp sight. It's actually advertised, on Rugers web site, for the redhawk but, will work on the hunter. The only thing is that the rear sight has to be raised much higher than the standard...Problem solved, I think...LOL

thanks guys,well the g20 is laying there in the shop now...as soon as he gets a prospect on it my hunter will be on the way!i also "liquidated" my pt145 taurus at the same shop...figured i never shot it and plus thats $300.00 i can use for a scope!
when she gets here i will post some pic's...i know it will look the same as all the others....but this one will be mine...all mine...

There is another trick to the rear sight issue. Silhouette shooters used to screw the rear all the way down and then count turns up to the initial zero position for the first set of targets. That way if you get fouled up by turning something the wrong way you can get back on track. So I would get my 50-75 yard zero with the irons then crank the sight all the way down counting the turns as I go. Reverse the process when you want to take the scope off and use irons. It's probably wise to try this a couple of times at the range so you're comfortable with the process.

That's right, Gary...it's what the military calls a "battle sight zero".
