best optics for new shooter - 07/13/2009 2:24 AM

Does any one have any recomendations for optics on a Contender in 7mm tcu? This will be for my daughter and she is 12. I was even considering the other type sights like the red dots or others.
Any experiance would be helpful. It will go on a 14 inch Contender.
She has limited handgun experiance.

Thanks,
Shawn

My daughter was 12 when she killed her first mule deer with a 7x30 waters in a 14 inch set up. We had a bushnell 2x6 scope on it and she can still out shoot me with it. The older contenders could be dry fired without cocking the hammer back, just had to break it open to reset the trigger. We had pictures of deer in different positions posted across the room and she (we) would practice getting different shooting positions and dry firing. When she shot her first loaded round she commented on how "this doesn’t kick". She is now 30 and still won't shoot a rifle but she will shoot a fire breathing pistol and hit.

I'd go with a scope in the 2-6x or 2.5-8x range over a red dot. A bigger target is easier to hit than a small one, especially for a new/young shooter. The Bushnells have a pretty long eye relief which may be too long for young arms. The Burris and Weaver are my favorites. I also have a Simmons 2-6x on a 22 mag and it is a nice scope for the money with forgiving eye relief.

For the money, I would say it is a 2-6 or 2.5-8 great scope! Right on Rod!
