Hi and I have a questin

Hi and I have a questin - 07/29/2009 11:31 PM

I have a BFR 500 mag. It kicks more than any revolver I have ever wrapped my hands around. I talked to JD Jones and he told me he could do it but would have to move the front sight back an inch.It would be the shark gill brake. I think the front sight set back would look stupid. Has anyone have an idea who could do this w/o moving the front sight. Magna port is out, and I have talked to Ross and he can only take in barrels, not a whole revolver. What the hell should I do beside put a brake on, take the front sight off, and put a JP dot scope on?

It's ok if it looks stupid if it works and you can shoot it. If not I would suggest a resale and a little less gun. No sense in tearing yourself up.

It would only look stupid until you got used to it. Most would eather mount a scope or a dot system which would not need a front sight. I personnely would keep the front sight so as to use hard sights in an emergency. The reason the sight has to be moved is to thred the end of the barrel for the muzzle brake.

Gary Reeder will install a brake and replace the front sight back in original location. His brake works, too. I have one installed on my 475 linebaugh.

Cub, hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but I believe JFJ has the Mag na Brake installed on his FA's. That brake is removable, thus requiring the sight to be relocated on the barrel.

The Reeder brake is not removable (without use of torch). Reeder soldiers the sight back in it's original position. This keeps the same sight radius, but sight is soldiered to brake and barrel, thus not removable. It prevents brake from working loose, also.

There's another solution: don't load it so hot.......there is really no reason to push max velocity aside from bragging rights.

Thats not my gun. A guy by the handle of 45nut has that one. I use to have a picture of it, I'll try to find it.

I know Tony V had a 500 BFR. It was viscious to shoot. He got better grips than the factory ones, and had it magna ported. He says it was much better.

Why on earth do you need a front sight on a scoped handgun?? With a scope on, I doubt anybody would go back to iron sights.

Besides, what's the current status of Mag-na-port? Are they out of business? And what happened to the Handgun hunters' hall of fame? I just purchased the old Hal Swiggett video which includes some scenes shot at that place. Would be nice to visit if it's still around.

KRal, Dont worry, there is no speaking out of turn with me. Most of you guys know WAY more than I do and I appreciate any knowledge you guys want to share. Removable or not, I just thought it would be one more gun to look at with a front sight located behind a break.

Now I have a question. Was any of what I said incorrect? The muzzle brake is installed by threading the last half inch of barrel, I kinow becuase we installed the KDF muzzle brakes on rifles for years. My comment on the emergency is because guns do get dropped and scopes and Dots do get broken and hard sights can save a hunt. I also know that not all people that put muzzle brakes on there guns like them. The added muzzle blast takes away the prone shooting position and the extra 1 1/2 inches on the end of the barrel will not allow some holsters. I was not aware someone was mounting a sight on the brake making it permenent in fact we used to sell a thread cover so people could use the KDF for sighting in and remove it for hunting, (they say you do not feel the recoil of the shot during the hunt). I always have though.
