what factory 300 win mag load? - 10/20/2004 12:43 PM

what factory 300 win mag load should i use in the 16.5" handgun barrel for deer this season?........considering i get it ready in time, of course.

i have about 50 rnds of Remington fired 300 mag brass already, so i'm thinkin i need to just use a rem. factory load so i can keep brass of the same headstamp.

what bullet weight?......a 150gr?.......or would the 180gr destroy less meat on the deer end?

Kyode,
The new Winchester AccuBond ammo looks to be a winner. The 180-grain load shoots good 1" (+/-) out of my buddy's rifle. I hunted with a 300 Win for several years and always had good luck with the 180 and 200-grain bullets. The 150's seemed to be a little light for the magnum velocities out of a rifle. It would be interesting to see how they perform out of the shorter barrel.

Kyode,
My buddy has been using the Hornady factory loads with the 165gr SST. He has been using them for the last 2 seasons 4 deer so far out to about 200yds. One good sized buck went about 30 yds the others were 3 does and they fell where they were shot. All pass throughs with good but not excessive expansion. He is shooting a 15" 300 WinMag.
I've got mine loaded with 165gr Nosler Partitions but have not shot any deer with them yet.

On the Federal Website they have a promotion you can download a coupon for a nice looking picture. All you need is a receipt for Vital-Shot ammo and $2. Knowing that I thought I'd pick up a box of their 180gr AccuBond ammo to try. Should be good and the picture's a bonus.

I think they intended it that way.

i shot it today.......and i'll say 180gr win power point factory loads are pretty mean out of a 16.5" barrel handgun. i'm thinkin a good 165gr load will be my target now.

didn't chrony today, but "encoredude" had a barrel just like it that put out good velocity. balistics should be close to what you'd get out of actual 30-06 rifle barrel. very powerful handgun!........just ask my sore palm/thumb

180's are too much for me right now without a break
