The hunt was on Catalina Island. It was a guided hunt through Wildlife West. Great guides and a great hunt. Very rugged and steep terain. Simular to hunting Couse in AZ. My 338 did it agian....it always seems to make me look good. Even on marginal shots. This buck was going up the hill quartedred away at an extreme angle. The bullet entered through the driverside hip, broke the pelvis, went through the body cavity and ended up in the neck. There was a hole in the bottom of the heart( lucky is better than good), THe 200 BT had shed its jacket and only weighed 125 grains. I am didapointed that the bullet came apart at that distance, however it did do a job on the buck....I have had great luck with this bullet on a dozen or so big game animals..this is the first time that I recvored one...Maybe it was a fluke that it shed its jacket..dont know. goin to have to try it some more
hope you guys have a great hoilday season
Good luck next year

PistolHNTR, nice shot and deer!! Every BT bullet I tried has shed their jacket. IMO...the Barens TSX is the only way to go! for big game. I'm shooting the 225gr TSX in my 338-06JDJ and love them. Just picked up some 185gr TSX's to try too. I have used this bullet from 15 yards to 300 yards on big game and it works. My wife shot a doe at 300 yards using a 150gr TSX in my 30-30AI. Bullet went from mid back up the spine and came to rest just under the hide in the shoulder. It weighed in at 148grs!

bullet performance is a very controversial issue, and each has his own ideas on bullet failure. imo, if a bullet penetrated stem to stern at 345 yards at a difficult angle, and did expand, i'd be tickled pink.......jacket er no jacket.

i'm a "dead is dead" sort of guy.

no offense encoredude(ol buddy ) but i'm sure barnes bullets are good. i'm just not willing to pay 50 cents to a dollar a piece for a bullet. especially if theres anything available that will work just as well. i can't afford that for one thing, and don't know i would, if i could.
i like to shoot my guns, and hunting loads. that could add up very quickly.

not downing ya paul....just stating my view here. you know i love ya!

Encordude
I love the barnes X. I have used it in my 375, 257, and a 50 with great success. I have a great load for my 338 using the 225 Tripple shock x(for really big game)...Up until now this BT has worked great on deer sized game. Maybe I expect too much from a jacketed bullet on that type of angled shot. I just think at 340+ yards that it would not have come apart....what if I were taking that kind of shot at 50 yards...the difference in velocity would really make that bullet unstable. I think I will comsider a 200 X or something else. I have had bad luck with BT's in a 7x30 and a 308. Up until now I thought it was good in the 338....I am wondering about my 8mm jdj now.....Gives me a reason to go shoot something with it and see how th 180 performs.

Re: Bullets - 12/02/2004 1:51 AM

I think when the BT's start going slow they don't get that wrap-around mushroom that holds the bullet together and the jacket just peels off but this is just a guess on my part. The close shots I've taken on whitetails with the BT's at close range have been devastating with my 309. Now I did hear from someone the 375 BT's were terrible at pistol velocities. Nosler does make a bonded core bullet now in most big-game calibers but they are a little more heavy than what you might normally use in a pistol.

Congrats pistolHNTR, nice buck and very nice shot! I still havent broke in the XP you sold me earlier this year, but i'm thinking about putting away the SBH and Contender this weekend and trying it out. I'll let you know if anything exciting comes from it.
