Steel Target Group buy

So a few of you asked for it and here it is.

I run a Laser Machining shop where we use lasers to cut steel and plastics and so on. I ran a group buy on another forum that went really well and I am going to run another one here and on a couple of other forums.

Here is the deal: I have to get enough orders to cut all of a 48"x 120" sheet of 1/2" thick AR500 steel. AR500 is the same armor plate steel that the military uses, it will hold up to repeated hits from 300 mag ammo with full metal jacket bullets without marking the steel at all. Softer steels will crater and then when you hit a crater and it will spit lead back at you! These will not have those issues. Anyways I have to get enough orders to cover a sheet or it is a no go. The steel costs me about $1.50 per pound and a sheet that is 4'x10' weighs about 825 pounds! I am not trying to make money on this, I am covering material cost and some for cutting costs on a $500,000 laser.



The plates are available in square and round shapes and have 2 .750" dia holes to hang the plates from. I bolt chains to the back and hang them from #6 rebar saw buck racks. Hanging the plates from the back angles the plate slightly down, enough that all most all of the lead splatters down into the ground below the targets. Very simple.

Also I have the .250" rack end supports that hold the saw buck up available for you to make your own stand for sale. You will simply need to add your own 1" .120" wall square tubing cut to 4' long with 2 3/8" holes drilled in the end. One gets two bolts and one gets just one, when not in used they fold down into a tidy little package for storage. Two set of legs and the cross bar of rebar can be carried in one hand easily and carried and set up where ever you like in about 60 seconds.

I am in Denver Colorado. As long as it fits in the USPS 12"x12"x8" box and is under 70 pounds the cost of shipping is $12.00...

Not to nit-pick, but those boxes are 6" deep, although you probably wouldn't fill one up anyway due to the weight. I use them all the time to ship heavy stuff, the only way to go. The USPS guys look at me funny when I drop them off and they can't lift them off the desk ;-)

OK, so according to my 9th grade math, about $159 + say $12 shipping for a set of 4 square plates of all sizes?

Still going I don't have enough to fill a sheet yet but I am close. If I get enough I would be happy to buy a second sheet as well...

Ok the orders have gone over very well and we well into a second sheet of steel at this point! I am going to add a couple of photos so you guys know exactly what you are getting. They were taken with my cell phone so they are not the greatest but they will suffice.

The end plate set is simply two of these triangle endplates that you will have to add the square tubing and bolts for, the rebar and legs should set you back perhaps $30 total on the top end and then you have to add the chains and bolts for the targets. I bought a bunch of 18" sections of medium heavy chain at Lowes for $1.25 a foot cut to lenght, you need 2 per target.





When assembled they will look like this, sorry these have gotten rusty in the back of my truck.

Pretty reasonable. You can hang the chains from the rabar with hooks or in this case I just used baleing wire. I am working on something simpler and better but they are not finished just yet.

What about 1/4" plate for small calibers like 22 LR? And maybe different shapes like animals, bottles, the card suits.... ect. A nice set for a woodswalk? Might be a little too much to ask, but it never hurts. The plate should be cheaper, and less weight to handle.

I think it would be easy enough to do the same target shapes in 1/4" standard steel but to do special animals and stuff would make them expensive due to reprogramming time and costs. I can program a round plate with two holes in a few minutes, to draw a squirrel would take a hour or more and I don't know it would work out all that well anyways.

Let me know if you want one of these plates in standard mild steel. But I think if it was me I would just get the heavier plate. You may want to just shoot 22s today but down the road you would want to shoot centerfire stuff at it too...

Fowler, I don't mean to sidestep you my friend, just giving another idea for the stand. Three 1/2" rebars 5 to 6 feet long with an inner tube rubber band at top, for a single target... My local lumber yard sells 1/2" rebar in 20' sections for $7.00, and they let you use their cutter on site. Just fold it up and throw it in truck.

OK, thanks for the info. I was just thinking. LOL

I have been to a bunch of different woodswalks and that are held by Rod & Gun Clubs. The course has 25 targets that are different shapes and sizes at varying distances. It's great fun and practice. But most are 100 miles or more from my house. We have over 100 acres that would be just the ticket to set up a woodswalk for our family and friends.

If a guy stayed with just 22 LR a standard 1/4" steel plate would take alot of abuse without much damage. I have a set of torches and drawings for the different shapes. Might take a little doing. Maybe over time I could set up something for the centerfire guns also.

I think at least 6 to 8 targets could be fit into a box and be kept under the 70 pound max. If your order ends up needing two boxes I will email you and you could send additional money to cover shipping after the fact. I would trust you guys for the postage later...

will you be doing this again, things got busy with the spring work and been away from the 'puter for a while - back now and thinkin strongly 'bout setting up a woods walk course for my kids

Guys, these are great targets, they are very portable yet will last a lifetime. The design is excellent & Bill is doing all of us a service by making them available, I sure like mine!
