Black Powder Encore Pistol?

Black Powder Encore Pistol? - 10/24/2010 2:53 AM

Thought I read something a while back about someone getting a custom BP barrel for their Encore pistol. So the wheels are turning, thinking about picking up a bergara BP barrel and cutting it down, or having it cut down to 15", so as I can take advantage of another season up here. I'm sure I'd have to get a muzzleloader forend, but is there something I'm missing? Will there be enough power generated out of that short a barrel? Appreciate any experiences or thoughts you may have. Thanks.

You will get plenty of power to take game with a 15" Encore 209x50 barrel. I have one from the Custom shop and have hunted with it for several years. I use a 250grn Power Belt bullet and 80 grns of 777 powder. Very accurate out to 50 so far. I'm hunting with it right now in Oklahoma for a Buck and doe this week.
I did have a rifle barrel cut down to 15" and it shot great also. My buddy bought it after I found this custom shop barrel.
You will need a muzzleloader forend, ram rod, and a few tools to remove breach plug and clean it up after shooting.

I'd like to think that I could cut down the ramrod that comes w/the barrel. Wouldn't it come w/the tools to remove the breech plug? Glad to hear that someone else has already been down this road. I'm not thinking about this as a long range proposition, I'd be really happy with 50-75 yds. I'm thinking the custom barrels probably cost pretty good, huh? I've been able to find the bergara barrels for about $180 new.

It will defiantly down a deer or pig if you do your part. The “modern” black powder firearms being produced today almost make the firearms our forefather used look anaemic. My 54 flintlock rifle shooting 90gr of FF will launch a 232gr round ball at 1900+ fps. At 100 yards, that is basically like shooting a 30-06 shooting a 180 projectile. It has that much energy.

If you cut down the ram rod you will not be able to use the attachments that screw in the end. It will still work, I just wanted to threw out the second part. If you want a custom hollow brass one that will fit your 15in barrel, give me a pm. I have a good friend that makes them. He just make a 48in one for me to clean my 54 longrifle.

I too am using mine this week in Oklahoma. I got mine when they were a factory barrel. I use 100 grains of Triple 7 and a 300 grain XTP sabot. I got a doe at about 100 yards and a wild hog at about 50 yards last year.

Greg in his handgun hunting vidio was using one on either antelope of a muley on one hunt. The animal went down every bit as well as one shot with his 308. Pretty impressive.
I would have liked to have seen him load it, and clean it as part of that hunt. Also showing his field reloading set up would have been good.
