What is the best 150 yard factory cartridge in the G2 for wild hogs? ..... Oh, and I HAVE to use lead free.

375 JDJ will handle any hog that walks and when you're ready to tackle an Elephant the 375 JDJ will handle them too.

If you reload you can probally use a 30 cal. bullet(30-30) or a 7 mm(7-30 waters) 44 cal(444 marlin) 375 JDJ.

I have a 30-30win bbl. Im just not sure if 150+ yrds on a hog is wishful thinking. The berral likes CorBon DPX. It like everything realy. Someone told me to check into the Barnes tsx tipped 130gr but I belive Barnes says it wont expand well after 100 yards with the 30-30 velocities. My other option is to get an Encore and go .308 or the likes, but if I can make the G2 work Id rather do that. The G2 is easy to wield.

Check into the 45-70...150 yards may be a lob, but that 300 gr Corbon load will definitely leave an impression on the hog!

Great comments!!!

I would look at a 7-30 or 30-30AI myself. Even a 35 Rem or 375 Win!!

The small bores, are going to be cheaper to feed that the 35 or 375. I don’t know if that is a variable or not, I just want to threw it out there.

If you do your part the cartridge will do its. I have shot quite a few deer and hogs with my 7-30 out to 175 yards.

375 JDJ or 375 Win in a 14" barrel would probably be the best. These two have always worked well for me out to the distance you are talking about.

I'd go with a .375 JDJ and a Barnes 270g TSX.

Re: Hog gun? - 11/23/2010 2:52 AM

Ok the onlyt catch is I have to use lead free bullets. I HAD a .358jdj but Brnes told me none of the tsx would work well at the handgun velocities, so I sold it and got an MGM 30-30 bbl.The places I hog hunt can have some wide open shots, as far as one could want and it's got me thinking on looing at the Encore if nothing is available in the G2. I love the small frame of the G2 though and would find it tuff to part with. Nothong from Barnes will work in the .375 cal. either, at least I dont think so from what they say about the .358 cal. stuff. I hope Im wrong.

Try North Fork custom bullets. They have cupped solids that the nose expands (lead free) The perfect bullet - it gives excellent penetration and expands. These bullets will handle any hog that walks.

trog,

Too bad you sold the 358 JDJ. I've used the Barnes 200 gr. TSX and the old Xs in mine with great results. The velocities are similar to the Barnes published data for the 358 Winchester. The deer, elk, and single antelope never complained! I have a 12" 358 JDJ and a 22" 358 JDJ barrel. If you need more ooopmh than the 30-30, have MGM or SSK recut the chamber to the 30-30 Ackley, OR better yet, the 309 JDJ ( I think MGM calls it the 30/444 to avoid trouble with SSK ). The 309 JDJ is a screamer AND you get the keep the G2.

The 30-30 AI will give you 30 Savage Vel out of a short gun. A GREAT round IMHO. In short, I am agreeing 100% with Doc.
