6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 05/31/2011 10:56 PM

Anyone out there ever converted a .308 Striker to 6.5 x .284? I could really use some help and advice on how to do this. lkurgan@sc.rr.com. 803-465-0836 9 to 8 est.

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 05/31/2011 11:17 PM

It's real difficult.

Step 1. Order barrel from McGowan.
Step 2. Get chambered.
Step 3. Install new barrel.
Step 4. Load and fire.

Jsut being fecesious. Ernie, the resident expert, has done this as well as others, and should be along any minute for the blow by blow.

But, it really is that easy.

Pics required.

The conversion is that simple. You will lose one round in magazine due to the fatter case though.

I am in the process of the same conversion now.( 6.5 x 284 ) Except I using an XP100R. Got my McGowen barrel, waiting on my PTG bolt. My muzzle brake is on order. Should be good to go by next week.

What velocities will the 6.5 X 284 produce?

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/03/2011 4:50 PM

Typically, with 140's from 2650-2750, depending on individual barrel/chamber and barrel length.

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/03/2011 6:04 PM

I'm new here and have a question....What are you doing to the chamber dimensions for the previously chambered 308 pistol? Savage makes a 6.5X284 rifle but puts it in a 30-06 size action. Most of what I've read says that a 6.5X284 is too large for a small action especially loading 140 grain bullets.

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/03/2011 6:07 PM

that will be a single shot for sure. the bolt face will stay the same. I would not even mess with the internal mag and just single feed it. what do you mean exactly by chamber dimensions? it will have a new barrel screwed on

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/03/2011 6:15 PM

The way I understand it, a longer 140 grain bullet has a longer OAL than a 120grain load. If you load both to the same OAL, the 140 grain bullet sticks way into the case.

Merlin will use a single-shot follower (he will not use the magazine).
When using a single-shot, reloading OAL's are meaningless.
When he has it chambered he can ask the gunsmith to give him throat length that will be a compromise between the 130 Berger VLD and the 140/142 grain: A-max, Berger, and Sierra Match King.
The base to ogive is all a little different in each of these bullets.
I seriously doubt he will want to use a 120 grain bullet, since he intends to shoot out to 1K and possibly further.

In the MOA LR Handgun Match last year I placed 1st at 500, 750, and 1000 yards in light gun class, and got third in heavy gun 500 yard, and tied for 1st for the roving field course.

Charlie,
Shooting at distance is not as impossible or spectacular as it may seem. IF you desired to shoot distance with a SP, I would be glad to help.

Within a short time I would have you hitting steel at 400 and 500 yards with one of my specialty handguns.
What is your XP chambered in?
It is all a matter of what you would like to be able to do.

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/05/2011 4:05 AM

My xp is still 7mmBR Rem just as it came from the factory. The only changes I made were adding the 2.5X7 Burris LER scope and the laminated wood thumbhole stock.

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/05/2011 4:54 PM

Hi Ernie,
Here's the info you requested. My accuracy load is 28.0 gr. of AC2015 with a Hornady 120 gr. bullet No.2811 or 2810. They both have the same B.C. MV was 2280-2300 FPS. My velocity load was
32.5Gr. of Win 748 for MV of 2350 FPS. Groups opened up with the 748 load.

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/05/2011 7:10 PM

I used a BC of .35 and 2300 fps.
500 yards Drop 17.50 MOA Drift 10 mph Crosswind 6.00 MOA
This is approximately how much MOA it would take at my elevation to make a connection at 500 yards with a 100 yard zero.
On your Burris scope it takes 8 clicks to equal 1 inch per 100 yards or Shooters MOA. So if you counted clicks it would take 140 clicks for the elevation, and 48 clicks of wind adjustment if you had a constant crosswind of 10 MPH.

s4s4u,

My brake and all the headspace work will be done by Ross Schuler of Mt home, Idaho.

How does the 6.5x284 do in the Encore?

It can do very good.
Key to accuracy is a quality barrel.
Have the barrel maker use a chamber for the Lapua brass, and is a match chamber (tight tolerances, but still does not require neck turning. Chamber or throater must be set up for the bullet weight/type you intend to use (for LR 130-140 VLD's).
Type of forend aluminum pillar or hangar bar.
If it is a heavy barrel or a step-up barrel you could tap the barrel and have a forend made with aluminum pillars so the aluminum pillars are the only part touching the barrel.
Forend screws will go directly into the barrel. I had a 30-30AI contender step-up barrel built like this and it was a one-holer.
Get a trigger pull as light as possible and still be safe, picatinny rail base with a 20-30 MOA slope, good muzzle brake (Holland's Gen 2 Radial) and a good rifle scope and the sky should be the limit.

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/09/2011 6:20 PM

Ernie ,
Could you explain the reason for a 20-30 MOA scope mount rail?
I'm not familiar with this type of scope mount rail. Although I do know a bit about MOA. Thanks.

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/09/2011 6:57 PM

Charlie,
A sloped picatinny (rail/Weaver type) mount is taller in the back than in the front. This allows you to use more of your internal scope adjustment, hence you can dial turrets more, and shoot further without running out of MOA adjustment.
a 20 MOA base, gives you 20 MOA more useable adjustment than you would have other wise.
Lets say you have a scope that has 60 moa total vertical adjustment.
So basically you have 30 MOA down and 30 MOA up if your mount is level and your reticle is centered. By putting a 20 MOA pic rail/base on, now you 50 MOA of useable adjustment.

Re: 6.5 x .284 Savage Striker - 06/09/2011 7:05 PM

Hard to see in the pic, but the back of the base is taller than the front. This is a 20 MOA picatinny rail.
