Guns you used to have ... and wished you still did

Guns you used to have ... and wished you still did - 12/16/2011 12:17 AM

About 10 years ago I purchased a FA 555, which used to be the model number for their 50AE guns. I only had it for about 2 yrs and sold it to buy a Desert Eagle in the same cal. I guess it was the "cool" factor that tempted me to do such a stupid thing. Anyway, I recently sold the DE50 and today took delivery of another FA 50AE. Fortunately the cost was about the same as I got for the other 8 yrs ago. This isn't the first time I've loved, and lost, only to love again. How about you?

Too many to count, so I don't. The only sold guns that really haunt me are the ones that weren't sold for another gun, but rather to pay a bill of some extraneous circumstance. Those I want all back ;-(

yep, I had to sell off a small collection when I went through my divorce years ago and then when I realized I was going down physically I downsized my archery and firearms collection and even downgraded my truck. What really sucks about the latter is I moved too soon and I could have held on to everything including the truck (new 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins with 20k on it) I could have still had my truck, bows and approximately 30 firearms I sold. AHHHHHHHHHHH, sorry I still get a little tweaked when I think about it.

I have to agree that there are just too many to give a good accurate count or limit to one. A 6" Colt Diamondback .22, a 4" Colt Python that had been to Larry Kelly, a Freedom Arms in 500 WE with the serial number I1111, and on and on and on. But, if I had to I wish I had the gun that parents bought me when I turned 12, a Marlin model 60 (nothing fancy) that got traded for something, who knows what.

I will say this, the thread has made go down memory lane a bit as I type.

My very 1st handgun was a used single-six. I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. In a fit of frustration I offered to sell it to a hunting buddy and it was gone in a flash. I consoled myself later by believing I would still see the gun every year when we met up for our annual hunt. A few years later we get together and are out in his pickup when he reaches under the seat and pulls out his latest acquisition. After we all "oow, aah" he tells us he traded the single-six for it! It was like a piece of me died and fell off!

He was carrying his new piece around shoved into an old yellow chore glove, so the next morning I stopped by the local gunshop to see about buying him a proper holster for it. I'm pouring over the used holster box when I come across one that looks familiar. I rush over to the used handgun display, and sure enough there is my old Ruger. Of course I buy it back, along with the holster.

I swore that was the last time I sell a gun, but it wasn't.

I have been threw a plethora of TC barrels. The only 2 I regret parting with are: 1, 12in full bull Encore in 44 Mag & 2, 14 TC Custon Shop 375 Win. The 1st one I can still justify because of my SRH's in 44 & 480. The second on I got back and THE PRECIOUS IS MINE, MINE... Muwahahahahah

Handguns, haven't made that mistake yet...but there's some I didn't buy (or hesitated on) and have regretted ever since.

Worst case was a 5.5" FA M97 in 45LC with octagonal barrel, action job, black micartas and snapcaps that I picked up, played with and put back in the case...and then called back the next day and it was GONE.

You see, I had recently taken possesion of my "second" 454 Casull just days prior that I had bought because it was a good deal...by the time I rationalized a sale (of either 454#2 or a kidney), it was too late.

I go threw guns like its no bodies business. When I got into TC's I started out with a Tender 35 rem w/the break. Sold it for a 30.30, wish I wouldve kept the 35 rem and just bought the 30.30 out right. I have a Remmy 700 SPSV in 243 I sold to a friend because I got a wild hair. It was gone roughly 2 days and I had to call him up to get it back. He laughed at me but its permanently in my gun cabinet. I just sold my 243 Encore barrel and bought a 7.08 barrel to replace it . As of now I think I made the right choice at least Im hoping(ROFL)

From someone who is currently studying engineering at the capstone, I would have to say that was a poor investment.

Re: Guns you used to have ... and wished you still did - 03/15/2012 12:16 AM

I like many have bought, traded, sold and regretted. One of my biggest regrets was a early model blackhawk 44mag I bought in college 30 years ago. Paid 125.00 for it and it was darn accurate. I think the guy who owned it never shot it, just carried it around in a holster. Shot my first deer with it in the everglades in 1981. Also regrett getting rid of my Remington 1858 black powder revolver I put together from a kit. I whittled the grips and blued the thing and it was beautiful and accurate to boot. I probably took more game with that pistol then any of my handguns. If I remember correctly, I paid 45.00 for the kit. It had been in the gun shop for 2 years. And about the third visit to the gunshop the owner said,I know your in college and can't afford much but I'll make you a deal on the kit. Just promise me you'll shoot it a bunch. I probably put three pounds of Goex through it. It was incredibly cheap to shoot back then.

Re: Guns you used to have ... and wished you still did - 03/16/2012 12:24 AM

I've ended up regretting every gun that I've sold or traded off. A German made Walther PPS, 30 carbines, Mini 14, my 1st Contender in .357 mag that I competed in silhouette matches when I was 13 years old, and about 5 others until I came to the conclusion that if it was important for me to get it in the 1st place, it is too important for mr to get rid of.
No regrets since.

Wish I had two of them back. My first S&W 460 Hunter, and a Ruger 10/22 rifle. That rifle was the most accurate shooter I have ever had in any caliber. I'd REALLY like to get my original 460 back, but that won't happen. I'll settle for the replacement though, and it will NEVER be leaving.

I too have sold guns in the past to pay bills. Then I learned about saving and investing. I don't care how bad it gets, I've promised myself to never sell another gun that means something to me. Hope I never have to break that promise.

Damn! Who started such a depressing topic anyway!!

My first handgun, which was a scoped 6" Taurus 669 .357. Nothing fancy but man would it shoot and I was very in tune with it. One other would be a G1 Contender with pachmayr's and a Super 14 SS 7-30 Waters.

Sold my first Model 29 recently, and kinda wish I hadn't. But, it was literally collecting dust and taking up space, so....

There was a Custom Remington XP-100 in 6mm-223. That is probably the one I miss the most. The gunsmith that I had build it couldn't read a tape measure and couldn't follow instructions worth a hoot and it didn't end up anything close to what I had expected BUT it did shoot and shoot great.

Then there was a Smith & Wesson Model 645 .45 ACP that I had customized. A good friend still has it and there is no way he is selling it, believe me I have asked.

Lastly a Stainless Ruger Redhawk with Rings and a 2x Leupold. Man did that thing shoot.

There have been a host of Contenders and Contender Barrels over the years. Some I should have held onto, others it didn't matter.

Dan Wesson revolver, nickle plated, 8"(ish) barrel in .45 lc. Mainly because I'd like another .45.

An SSK contender in 6.5 JDJ is the primary handgun that I regret selling. (I have not sold very many) However, the firearm that I regret selling most is an old 30-06 on a FN Mauser action. It was "my" first high-powered rifle. Should have kept it for old times sake. When I was in college I sold a 4" S&W M&P 38 spl to acquire a 22 revolver. The 38 was a gift to me from an uncle. I should have kept that one too.
