which caliber for backup?

which caliber for backup? - 01/18/2012 6:22 PM

Getting ready to get a backup pistol for bow hunting in area with bear and lions. I am leaning toward a Glock 29SF and was wondering whether 45acp or 10mm would be best?
Thanks for your ideas.

Being a wheel gun guy, I would go for a .44mag w/4" barrel. Just my 2 cents worth!

I usually go with the bigger the hole the faster the boat sinks, but I might consider the 10 mm with this load.

If I chose the 45 I would use Double Tap's 255 gr cast load.

One problem though the cast bullets are not reccomended for Glock's rifling so I would go with some other brand of gun.

Of course a wheel gun would be capable if more power than either, but a .460 Rowland comes close if you want an auto.

With the Glock I would go with the 10mm

remember, double tap sells the glock replacement barrels which are just drop ins and highly accurate. unless brown bears were on the menu i figure a 10mm semiauto in a glock is about as reliable as one can get. haven't had a jam in any of mine with any kind of ammo in about 18 years. i'm gonna get a glock SF 20. talked to mr mcnett at double tap and that hardcast 10mm ammo has been used repeatedly to take bison with one shot kills.

.45 Colt! The .45 ACP and 10mm are a little too anemic for my liking.

I would go with the Glock 20, BUT, I would also carry a 44 or a 45 revolver with a 4" barrel.

I also am not a semi fan. I would be carrying my M97 in 45 Colt. Small, light, easy to carry, & will whomp something.

If your set on a glock, I'd go with the 10mm otherwise I'd go for a 1911 with the 460 Rowland conversion in it. Of course it also depends on what you want back up from, if it's cats and average size blackies either would be fine but if your getting into grizzly country or areas where big blackies are the norm I'd go with the 460 in a semi auto but I personally would carry a wheel gun for serious back up.

In my humble opinion, a .44mag or .45 colt loaded right will stop anything out there, including hoomans. One gun fits all, so-to-speak. A 10mm or .45acp, however will find limitations on the upper end of the scale. I personally prefer a short bbl wheel gun for back-up covering all species of ne'er-do-wells, from mountain to mall. My town gun is my bush gun. I just can't do that with a Glock. But that's just me.
