.41magnum blackhawk - 04/04/2012 11:15 PM

Would like anyone's opinion on a .41 rem.magnum blackhawk. I went looking for a 44 but cme across a 4-5/8" blackhawk that looks to have been mag-na-ported. I want this for a knockabout and pack rig esp. during bow season. What do you guys think? I have a SBHH44,& a 4-5/8 45C bkhawk. How does the 41 stack up? Thanx for any input. ART

I have a 6.5" semi-custom .41 RBH from Dixie. Love it!

About halfway between a 357 and a 45.

Not sure that the 41 needs porting, will be loud. Not that they all aren't loud anyway. I used to have a Bisley SBHH in 41, but it just didn't fit anything as I also have a 45 and a 357 so down the road it went. Would be a good compormise tho.

Jamesfromjersey has used a 41 mag FA quite a bit and has taken some pretty decent sized animals with it. He loves his 41 mag. I'm sure he will give you advice regarding the calibers capability.

I am pretty sure James loads his 41 mag up to levels only attainable by a FA 83. quite a bit hotter if I understand correctly

Exactly!

Not to steer you away from a new handgun, but you can accomplish all your wants and need with the 45lc.

All of this is true, however I would wrestle a moose for a tricked out 4 5/8 .41 magnum. When I get back to Texas I have plans to make that a project of mine. You either get hooked on the cartridge or you don't. I effen love it. You can make a 210grn XTP scream out of a 10 inch contender barrel and seriously book out of a revolver without doing anything dangerous(typical with 5 or 6 grains less of the same powder for the same weight projectile as you would in your .44 mag). #9 or H110 is your friend for the hot stuff. However in Texas the biggest thing I'll ever contend with is maybe 400 pounds of tusky pork, or possibly the rare but dangerous berzerk cow. I would never say that the .41 is better than the .44 mag or .45LC but it is my favorite without question.

I also use the 41 mag a lot. It is my favorite cartridge (and I have many). One of my FA 41s is "most accurate revolver" that I own. I have used the 41 on many "deer sized" exotics with good results.

My friend from Ohio says "you Texans all shoot 41s". LOL Yup, for a reason. It does what we want done.

I have had at least one (and sometimes more) 41 Mag Blackhawk revolver since 1982. I would never be without one. I have 44's and 45's too, but there is just something about the 41. No it is not better, but it is somehow "just right".

KRal, you're officially in Time Out - go sit in the corner and think about what you've said...I thought we weren't going to use the "n" word again. By that same logic, you have several guns that you "need" to give to me!

About the 41, try it...you'll like it! My 97 likes Speer GDHP's and XTP's, but the deer and hogs hate them

Keith said if the 41 had come along first he never would have messed with the 44, I think that says it all. The difference in power between a 41 and 44 are almost non existent and for most game you would normally use the 44 for they would never know the difference.

It is only .019" after all. I've never owned a 44, and would buy a 41 over a 44 anyday. But it doesn't compare to the 45LC ;-)

Thanx Guys for all the input, she's on layaway @ the tradin post. Grandsons are argueing over who's going to claim it! My 45c blhwk is a convertible w/45acp cyl. The boys love shootin' the acp!The breakdown is this: I get to keep my 44 hunter, my 15yr old claims the 45conv. my next grand son gets the 41 and my nephew claims my 44 bulldog! But they'll let me "use em" while their in school! lol! What have I started? Thanx again! Art

I see you live in Maine. Would the "tradin' post" happen to be Kittery's?

I stopped there last fall on a visit to your beautiful state. I really liked that country. Kittery's is about the neatest store I think I have ever been into. I wondered because they too had a 4 5/8 41 mag that was still on their web site for quite a while. If not for the out of state thing, it would have come home with my buddy.

We hunted with another big 41 mag fan. Wayne Boscowitz! I read of his use of the 41 many years ago and it is what prompted us to hunt with him. We talked a little bit about that caliber and that gun. He said that he had been using a Colt Python and noticed too many times when he walked up to bears he had shot after being treed with dogs, that the bear still wanted to bite and scratch him. He went to a local hardware store to get a 44 mag, and they were "scarce as hen's teeth" but they had a 41 Ruger so he got that instead. Wayne said "I don't know about the ballistics and all..I just know that when I shoot a bear with a 41 mag he just falls DEAD". The only load he has ever used is the Remington factory JSP. I have duplicated that load with my handloads, but really like the Speer Deep Curl. It worked well on a white tail this past fall.

Good luck with the 41. I think you made a great choice not letting it get away.

Sorry, Did I fail to mention, I want a .41 FA83! (I used the "W" word this time) after all, it is more appropriate...

A friend of mine has a Blackhawk and really likes it. I have done some loading for him and it really shoots good. As for being magnaported, it will be louder for sure. My friends gun is not magnaported and it is comfortable to shoot so that one should be a pussycat. Good luck.

My hunting buddy uses a 4" .41 Mag in a Taurus Tracker total titanium which only has 3 1/4" of rifled bbl due to the design and shoots the Winchester 175 gr Silver tips.
To date I know of several Elk and Black Bear killed cleanly with it.
The 4 5/8" BH will get the job done if needed.
Shoot em where they live.
