Hog Hunting Bullet - 12/10/2012 5:48 PM

Whay would be the best type Hog hunting bullet? I would be using a 7mm-08 or 308. I have shot the Nosler Partition. What about the Barne's TSX, swift, and Scirocco?

you can't use those! hogs are bullet proof!

just kidding.

I have seen the gristle plate on a few first hand though, and I could see how a "lesser" bullet moving quickly could just blow up without much penetration. to be safe I would use any of the partition styled bullets you mentioned or the TSX. The bonded ones like the Scirocco should work too

I prefer premium bullets in riflke calibers on hogs. You never know when you'll encounter one with a thick gristle plate and you will then be glad you are loaded with a good tough bullet.

Mark, I would go with a heavy for caliber bullet in either round you have mentioned above. Stay away from BT's & or varmint bullets and you will be fine. Even the biggest hogs gristle shield won't stop a 30 cal. 180 gr. A-Frame, XP3, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Grand Slam, or like bullet. Aim straight & you will be fine.

I'm partial to Accubonds, I've had good luck with them on elk and the nice thing is you can use BT's to sight in with or for deer and then switch to AB's without having to re sight. They are basicly just a bonded version of the BT's but they are tough.

I was hoping for some comment about the airgun video.. That is a little crazy in my opinion. In the caliber in question I believe that the Nosler Partitions are hard to beat.

A good cast 170-180gr. made of hardened wheel weight metal will penetrate, but still give some expansion.

That video made me think of hunting elephants with handguns. You get pretty much one shot angle to choose from. Anything else is a "party". Not sure doing the highjump over the swarm trying to get that shot would be high on my list ;^) Not young enough for those antics. But I am smart enough to bring enough gun ;^)

Craig

There it is: "Enough" gun", and that is very subjective. I have killed a lot of wild pigs, with archery equipment, and have no doubts that any good hand gun .357 and up will do the trick nicely, but would have some real reservations about air guns.

The largest of the big bore air guns are still below the capabilities of the standard .45 Colt loads.

Absolutely. And while the video proves it can be done, there were sure a lot of gyrations involved with getting the shot. The shooter did exercise one of the fundamental aspects of any hunting. Know the limitations of your equipment and yourself, and work within those limitations.
