244 rem or 270 win to rechamber - 07/12/2013 6:36 PM

I have been slowly acquiring gramps guns since he passed away last fall. So far I have a 17rem and 300svage (model 700s I believe) I already have 308 in the encore as well as 223. What's left is a 244 rem and a 270win model 700. Doesn't really seem like I would need either caliber as most of the spectrum is covered. With the slower twist in the 244 rem would be mostly lighter bullets from what I understand. Seems lots love the 270 as is. Which would be better to use to rechamber to something else? either another small caliber or a bigger caliber for large N American animals if I ever venture out of NY. I am getting into reloading as well as gramps was big into that. I hate to see gramps guns leave the family, but still gotta save money for his pistols. But these rifles are definitely nice looking guns and I usually only shoot pistols!

Well, both guns will do anything we have in the country. The 270 has enough of a bullet selection to cover chipmunks to brown bears. The 244 would just be cool to have even if you never fire it.

Leave 'em both alone. The 270 is one of the most versatile chamberings there is. You could ream the 244 to 6mm-06 I suppose, but I wouldn't molest an heirloom like that for a couple hundred fps.

Well I am a fan of the 270, it is flatter shooting than the 308 and I've seen them do things they shouldn't be able too going by numbers on a piece of paper. I personally have no use for any of the 6mm guns except for kids. There are too many calibers that will do anything those will and more but better. That said if I were going to rechamber I'd go with the 244 WBY so I was getting the most and making it a better varmint cartridge since you would gain roughly 200fps.

My favorite rifle is a Rem 660 in 6 mm. What is the 244 modeled in? If it is a Rem, it will shoot 75- 90's real well. Mine is a tack driver with most any bullet. Although yours has the slower twist, it should be quite a varmiter with 75 grainers.
