45LC reloaders using H110 or 296- what primer? - 06/02/2014 12:21 AM
Ok I'm getting ready to start loading some hot rounds and want to know what primers y'all are using. The boolit is a 315 LFN hardcast and I will be using W296 powder and shooting these out of my 5.5" Bisley.

I would use mag only on 296 or 110
To pick a brand CCI

Winchester Large Pistol (WLP) is all you need for standard or magnum.

Its all about brisance, the shattering effect of an explosive. Winchester primers have a little bit higher brisance than other manufacturers primers, CCI is a little milder. I don't load for the .45LC, but in my .41 mag I see very little real world difference because I work up to a load and playing with powder volume and crimp will typically sort out your ignition speed issues. Your milage may vary in that larger case, but I certainly wouldn't stress about magnum vs standard primers, use what you you've got and take good notes.

It even says "For standard or magnum pistol loads" on the box.

I have tried a bunch of different primers and the results weren't as spectacular as one would think. With 296/110 a lot of manuals will say use mag primers, but from my testing they are not needed. Use what you have and don't worry about it. I found some differences in es and velocity but accuracy didn't suffer whether mag primers or standard primers were used.
