I want to build some new stands for steel plate(s) (that will not need resetting). I do have welding capabilities.
NOT a steel challenge style 6 plate rack, but something portable for field shooting.

What do you guys use for swinging plates etc?
I'm a visual guys so pics are best.

I made my stands from an old round trampoline frame. This one holds 4 plates, the other 3 have just the one 10"er in the middle. The straps are cut from an old conveyor belt from a rock quarry I happened upon at the local landfill.

Portable sawhorse clamps and rebar axle. My targets have a piece of pipe under them and I slide the rebar through and clamp the sawhorses to that. Gravity powered self righting.

Sawhorses get shot up, replace them as they are cheap and dispensable as well as light and foldable for transport.

I would recommend you take a look at the Evil Roy from Action Target. They make a portable stand with a HD rifle plate that will take thousands of rounds. Eventually the weld will break but mine have lasted years. I'll post a pic later.

A buddy in CO sells end plates that have a 3/4" hole in them for a piece of rebar. These are bolted to a 1" steel tubing for legs. They fold up flat that way and will fit in the truck or toolbox. There are 4 little steel tabs that slide on the rebar and they hold the chains/plates. Takes about 45 seconds to set it up and the same to take apart. When I'm shooting steel, this is the easiest way I've found to do it. Works great, takes up no room and cheap to put together. He also makes AR500 plates of various sizes if you need those. I don't have a picture right now but could get you one later if you need. The end plates are relatively inexpensive if I remember correctly and the other pieces (legs, rebar) you can buy locally.

Vance,

I use a couple of different steel setups.

Commercially available options
1. folder from Big Dog Steel in Ohio - uses chain to hang the plate in the frame of the folder, light and quick to deploy
2. Rebar sawhorse design steel flasher from Spectre Targets. Gong has a bright orange flag that appears when the gong is hit (long range setup)

DIY - cheap and easy for soft soil conditions: shepherd's hook from Home Depot / Lowes

Can't paste from my iPad right now but I use 4 pieces of black iron pipe for the legs.1 piece of pipe for the cross piece, 2 tees and 2 street elbows, all in 1/2".

I then hang one of Widener's 1/2" AR500 steel silhouette targets from the cross piece.
