Xp 100

School me on them. I have done some research and I think that is the gun some of y'all are using? Why do some have thr grip at the very back and others have an extension behind the grip? Do you just buy them off gun broker and completely customize them?

Someone with proper knowledge will be along shortly but till then I'll pitch in.

The ones with the grip at the front of the action are called mid grips and that's how the XP100 is. Balances better that way.

The ones with the grip at the back are either a conversion so that the owner can run a different trigger or, more likely, a XP100R. The XP100R was a rear grip magazine fed pistol. The rear grip was needed so that there was somewhere for the magazine to go since on the mid grip the trigger mech runs where the mag would go.

The original XP was a midgrip. Then Remington discontinued the model. After some prodding by shooters they brought the XP back but with a rear grip, seemingly because it was easier for them to do. I don't really care for the rear grip as it is too front heavy and pretty much a bench gun only. The midgrip can be shot as any other handgun as it balances nicely. The Savage Striker is another midgrip bolt pistol, but also has an internal box magazine.

Ernie I would like a long range gun just for plinking and maybe whitetail out to 400 yds, I'm thinking something 6.5mm bullet

It's now a 7mm RSAUM, which I personally think is a near perfect round for the XP-100. Shorter case than the 284 base rounds, and has a bit more case capacity to boot.

So do yall just buy a used cheap gun off gun broker and send it to a custom builder to have what you want built? How much would I have invested in something like this if I sent it off for clambering and barrel put on thanks

Cheap? If $750 and up is "cheap", then yes. Occasionally an original XP will slip through under that but you are better served scouring the classified ads of the various forums and even then it is rare these days to see one under 6 bills. A custom stock will run $300 + or -, as will a quality barrel blank. Depending on the 'smith and the options you want, you can easily have well over 2 G's in the pistol.

With due dilligence, I expect so. Not likely from gunbroker tho.

He may want reliable accuracy at distance for fun and maybe for hunting too.

If he wants a TC fine.

Depends what the definition of custom is.
I have picked up used custom XP's way under 2K.
Wouldn't buy one any other way, as there tends to be surprises.
Total cost of building one from the ground up with the best you can buy, you are right in the market area with some being lower and some being higher.

My XP started with a purchase of one I found off armslist.

I then sold the scope and mount along with silhouette sights for more than I paid for the gun.

I purchased a Bartlein barrel, scope base, stock and other needed items over a few months to ease the cost of those items. Several months later, I had my custom XP-100. For me, the wait, and the cost, was worth it.

Hands down, a better platform for longer ranges than the T/C in my opinion (I've owned Contenders and Encores). In fact, I'm resisting the urge to sell my lone remaining T/C Encore to assist with funding another XP-100 build. Only reason I haven't is this particular Encore is extremely accurate, so I'm planning to keep it.

My build costs were lower than several more prominent smiths charge. Even with the build cost, I'm very glad I did it. Just wish I'd did so sooner.

16" Krieger, Remington Varmint / Sendero contour

6.5-284 Norma would be a good choice, as would a 284 with the proper throat.

The barrel on my custom XP is 17.5" long not including brake.

It started out as a Bartlein #4 contour 29" long. Diameter at the muzzle (17" at bbl/brake junction) is right at 0.880".

It doesn't cost me $2k to build one. But I do my own work. I've bought a few xp's recently for around $600. I use a lot of McGowen barrels. They are reasonably priced IMO. Most are VERY accurate. Took one to the MOA match in 2014 and won with it.
