Looks like a Dominator? setup.

Re: Beefed up 1911 - 12/09/2016 6:19 PM

You are correct junebug.
The factory 308 Win barrel did real good with factory ammo at 200 yards.

It killed on both ends in 308

Not really the best grip in the world for Heavy recoil!Shot really well though .Why the caliber change?

Back in the day -- perhaps late 70s or early 80s, Hal Swiggett let me shoot one he had in .308 while hunting on the Y.O. Ranch. My hand has never let me forget it!

Back in those days you didn't see muzzle brakes.

top photo shows my 7-08 Dominator while bottom photo shows my special order 30-30 Dominator......the recent top photo shows all the different caliber conversion kits I can install on the same Colt frame....7-08 - 22lr - 10mm - 45acp - 45acp carbine. The Dominator always fascinated me from the first time I looked at Pachmyer`s catalog when it was released. Went and bought their video with Hal Swiggett hunting rams at a California ranch and then called and had them make me a special order in 30-30. Used it many years ago to shoot whitetail. A special needs handgun hunter asked to buy it and I sold.... Ran into a 7-08 Dominator kit from a guy in Texas and bought it because I was sorry I let the first one go. Nosler factory 120gr BT ammo is accurate and fairly easy to shoot. No need for heavier bullet weight on medium size game....I wrote a short member article last August titled "Double Duty Handguns" which was a take off on an old Wiley Clapp article of the same name. I describe the Dominator and other double duty handguns......

H-4350 is about the most popular powder for the rifle guys. I might go a smidgen faster with Varget.
Will run the 123-143 gran bullets/Hornady brass.
It is getting closer to getting done. Bluing is the next step

I suppose the imagination is the limit. That's pretty dang cool.

Re: Beefed up 1911 - 12/15/2016 5:05 PM

You use a lot of the Radial port brakes instead of side discharge, any reason? Seems like they would kick up more trash from the ground. Are they just as efficient?
Posted By: Hoggin

Re: Beefed up 1911 - 12/15/2016 5:15 PM

I think they work just as well but I actually use both. Only time it's a problem is if you shoot prone

That ought to work. Nicely done!!!!!!!!!!!!! How muzzle heavy does it feel?

Re: Beefed up 1911 - 12/17/2016 5:28 PM

Just a little. Made the barrel slightly larger than factory. Still very easy to point. Should be able to shoot free hand

What frame did you use?
Posted By: Hoggin

Re: Beefed up 1911 - 12/19/2016 4:24 PM

It's one of the many cheap 1980 aftermarket frames. I'm not in the shop and can't remember.

Re: Beefed up 1911 - 12/19/2016 9:09 PM

Recoil from a 308?

Try this one. A slight variation of a 45 Raptor. I used a .458 barrel rather than .452. A rimless 460 S&W Magnum.

THIS recoils! I have replaced the mainspring housing with a flat one and curved the bottom corner of the house and frame, but it just plain hurts...can fire it three times in a row is all. Then I am done.
