Porting Barrel

Porting Barrel - 12/25/2017 4:09 AM

Thinking of porting my 454 casull SRH for recoil reduction. Mag na port is the only company I am familiar with. They offer a rifle type porting for barrels longer than 7-1/2" which mine is 7-1/2". Any thoughts?

The barrel porting is not as efficient as a brake in my opinion. But it does not add to barrel length as most brakes do,so that is a plus. They do add to the noise level as do brakes. As I never shoot without plugs or muffs the extra noise is a non issue. The porting will help tame the beast!

ALL OF MY 454 FA REVOLVERS HAVE THE TRADITIONAL 4 PORT REVOLVER PORTS BY MNP. MNP ALSO OFFERS A 4 PORT "QUAD PORT" OF THE TYPE FAVORED BY GEORGE FAERBER ON HIS SPECIALTY PISTOLS (ENCORE, XP, etc.), WHICH I HAD DONE TO A 12 INCH 357 MAX CONTENDER BARREL AND A 15 INCH 308 ENCORE BARREL AND THEY WORK GREAT. THE ORIGINAL 2 PORT REVOLVER PORTS ALSO WORK WELL ON S&W's AND REDHAWK's. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND MNP ON A RUGER BISLEY. I HAD A 7 1/2 INCH 45 COLT BISLEY MNP'ed AND IT SEEMED TO CHANGE THE RECOIL DYNAMICS FOR THE WORSE SO WHEN I HAD JACK HUNTINGTON CUSTOMIZE A 5 1/2 INCH RUGER BISLEY 45 COLT FOR ME I DID NOT MNP IT.

Mag-Na-Port is the way to go. I have revolvers/Contenders done that way. They also do a Mag-Na-Brake on revolvers which reduces recoil more than the ports, but it does add some length to the barrel.

I just heard back from MNP about my 454, regarding the Mag-Na-Brake. Because I have the older model SRH with the grey finish, they would buff the finish to a low luster stainless finish. I really like the grey finish. Maybe I will work on a single-shot in 308 caliber. Sounds like a good reason to get another firearm. I enjoy shooting the 454 now with out porting or any other recoil reducing fixture on the barrel. Anyway thanks for all the advise.

You should contact Ken Kelly at MNP, and see what options he can offer to retain the original finish. Maybe buffing only the barrel, but leaving the frame and cylinder original finish. They have a number of color schemes for the SRH that are not cataloged.
