Bullet trajectory

Bullet trajectory - 12/30/2017 2:01 AM

454 SRH, 7-1/2" barrel, bushnell scope.
In sighting in this handgun, I wanted the maximum distance I could get out to about 150yards on a deer-size animal. To be able to hit the vitals without worrying about too much in the way of trajectory.
Using a Barnes 250grn XPB bullet I got the following trajectory with the factory cartridge.
50yds-+1"
100yds-0
150yds--6"
This differed from the Barnes table. I live at 5500ft so that maybe allows for some error.
Do any of you gentleman who shoot a 454 have a similar trajectory? I'm still trying to learn about this 454, but it does seem to like these Barnes bullets.

I don't have a 454, however if you are looking for a MPBR of 150 yds, I thing I might adjust my 150yard point to hit a little higher. 6" low is awful close to a low miss if you aim for the vitals on a whitetail.

I plugged the Barnes info from their website of 1700 fps and a BC of .141 for the 250 into the Hornday calculator with a 1.5" sight height and got:

+ 0.9 @ 25
+ 2.5 @ 50
+ 3.0 @ 75
+ 2.4 @ 100
+ 0.5 @ 125
- 3.0 @ 150

-0- @ 129 yards

That is how I would sight in for a point blank zero to 150

Thanks, I'm heading out today again. I'll make an adjustment to reflect that advise and see what happens. 98Redline's advise seems to make sense with s4s4u's calculations. With the cost of bullets I just didn't want to make try-it adjustments any more than necessary. Looking at the weather you folks in the mid-west and east are really getting some winter weather.

My FA .454 is sighted dead on at 100. The 140 yd. turkey I killed this year was hit 3" below my point of aim. That was with a 260 gr. Speer Mag HP loaded to 95% of max.
Cessna, I'm at 2200 feet.
I woke up to 3" snow today. We have 2 days of doe season left. High tomorrow is 15*. Guess I'll see how tough I am.
