Grip Question

They say there is no such thing as a stupid question but this may be one. That is because this is a personal and subjective thing but I think some of you can help out with your experience.

My all time favorite firearm of any kind is my blued 4.62" New Model Super Blackhawk 45 Colt. I know from it that I like the old plow handle type of grip. However, just for the experience I would like to try a Bisley grip. I would also like to try a hunter model with integral scope mounts. This means I must settle for .44 Magnum and a long barrel but I can live with that.

Problem is I have never held a Bisley gripped revolver and I have checked every gun store within an hour drive and cannot find a Bisley to try out.

I have read many times that a Bisley recoils more like a double action revolver does. So I am thinking that I might like it, even if not as much as the plow handle, and that is because I have a S&W 629 and I have no problem with its grips when shooting hot .44 loads. I don't shoot many of them because it is a Smith but the grips are fine.

Since I will have to order one sight unseen, and just guess, do you think it is a relevant comparison between the Bisley and the Smith grips? Or is it apples and oranges.

I know I will be happy with a standard grip hunter but I am thinking of taking a chance and getting the Bisley because I think the chances are I will like it too.

I've not shot a 629 so can't compare there, but I do feel that a Bisley does recoil and feel similar in the hand to a SRH or GP100. I don't care for the traditional plow handle at all. Once I grabbed a Bisley it felt like it was just made for me.

I too would like to try a bisley grip revolver. I'd like to look at the new BFR.

I've got M29's and Bisleys and I don't think that they feel the same in recoil but it is a hard comparison really. The DA Smiths hit the web of my hand much harder than a Bisley when the loads get heavy.

I really like the Bisley grip for recoil control. At one time I had a friend shoot two 44 mags; one a Bisley and one a Super Blackhawk. He swore that the Bisley was loaded lighter even though they were the same load. This same friend HATED shooting any 44 mag until the Bisley he now owns. There is a reason that most of the big boomers are built on the Bisley grip frame.

With that said, some really don't like the Bisley grip at all. It would really be great if you could find one to try before you buy. Then again they aren't hard to get rid of if it does not work for you.

Not a reasonable comparison between the 629 and the Bisley. I prefer the SBH grip to all others, including the Bisley, but I'm in the minority.
Looks like you'll probably have to buy one and test it. The grip can be changed, or the gun sold easily, if you don't like it.

FOR ME THE RUGER BISLEY GRIP IS SUPERIOR TO ANY S&W OR BLACKHAWK/SUPER BLACKHAWK GRIP, AND I ALSO REALLY LIKE THE POSITION/CURVE OF THE BISLEY TRIGGER, AND THE HAMMER, BUT IT IS A MATTER OF PERSONAL PREFERENCE/EXPERIENCE. GIVE IT A TRY.

Rey makes a great point. The Bisley hammer and trigger are as much a part of the package as the shape of the "handle".

I just sold my Bisley hunter because it beat the hell out of my second finger, in fact I dont think I ever shot a Ruger .44 single action that didn't, regardless of the grip style. All double action for me.

I would disagree with that. My .44 Redhawk rolls in my hand and is a pleasure to shoot where as the Bisley and the plow handles seem to exert their recoil straight back causing my second finger to take a lot of punishment. But thats just me.

Thanks guys. I have a lot more info now to digest. Still undecided at the moment. But I wonder, do I lose my membership here if I mount a black scope on a SS revolver?

I think black looks better than that funky silver color that looks nothing like SS.

Well, I tried expanding the range of my search and still could not find a Bisley type grip to fondle so I have ordered a RSB Hunter .44 mag with traditional grip.

I have three scopes I will try on it; a Trophy Bushnell 2-6 for long range target, a Burris fixed 2X for some hunting and a Red Dot for heavy brush hunting. 45Man, they are all black.

I prefer a black scope for hunting. I dislike silver scopes. I have all my silver scopes Camo taped.
Quite a few years ago I was deer hunting with a good friend and he told me he saw a white flash that he thought was a Deers tail. When he looked with his binoculars he saw it was my gun - stainless steel 629 - with silver scope in my hand! Since then I Camo tape my stainless guns!

Me too. I like black scopes on everything, no matter what it is, usually matte black. Although I have to admit that a silver Leupold looks pretty damned good on an FA.

I prefer Matte Black. My eyes do not like contrasting silver and stainless finishes.

It's a shame you couldn't come up with a Bisley grip to try out...

.....as far as the scope colors; I'm not prejudice....

I kind of like the black scope. I even have another Leupold in silver but felt the gloss black was the obvious choice when I decided to try on on my Hunter.



I prefer the Bisley myself, though the only plow handle I have is a BFR.

I had the grip frame modified and grips made by Jack Huntington. After this work I find my Bisley Hunter is even more comfortable to shoot hot loads through than my SRH with the Hogue Tamer with the blue absorber in it.
