Back to Basics

Well guys, its time to admit it but I have turned full circle again. Everyone here who knows me, knows I have a a bunch of TC's, Encores and Contenders. Little and big bores alike. I recently rekindled the fire and returned to my 221, 222, 30 Herrett and 357 Herrett all in 10" flavors. This recent revelation came when I run across Peterson's specialty magizine 'Hunting Handguns' by Bob Milek. when it comes down to it, the Contender has a trigger pull like an Encore can only dream of. There are alot of guys out there who still write articles, but I sure do miss the stories Milek could tell. He wrote on another level even if some it was dreaming too. There's not many writers out there today that 'put you there' while you're reading the story. Who's your favorite writer today? He's the main reason I handgun for Elk!!

Ross Seyfried and Brian Pierce. I read just about everything I can find they have writen.

These days I would say Brian Pearce, Larry Weishuhn and Mark Hampton. My all time favorite writer would have to be Elmer Keith. Keiths writing has the same "back to basics" effect on me with my favorite round the .44 mag.

Jim Carmichael hands down. Not only a true conservative gentleman's gentleman, but a venerable physicist in his own right.
2nd would of course, have to be - Pat Mcmanus!

Bob Milek has a son that was writing for a while and even made it into noslers reloading book and I was hoping he would pick up where his father left off. Any idea where he went?

Bullelk, I have a good collection of the older gun mags with articles written by most of the authors listed above. I`am always re-reading their stories and never fall to pick up something new.The mag your talking about is an excellent example
because it seems the articles about handgun hunting have taken a nose dive when compared to the older issues.Remember when American Handgunner and Handguns Quarterly first came out and the stories they contained??? I remember a prize being offered in one of these mags was a free black bear handgun hunt with Dick Metcalf at Foggy Mt. plus a free handgun.
This is another reason that I`am so glad that I found this web site.

John Taffin, Mark Hampton and JD Jones.

I like Taffin for the history and gun tests.

I like Hampton for the hunts all over the world.

I like Skeeter Skelton for the humor and tall tales.

I like JD Jones for the wildcats and experiments.

I like Doc Rodgers (WV Hitman) for the charlie hunting and bullet testing.

I like Al George for the "pioneering" in handgun hunting.

Another one that isn't too bad at all is Gary Reeder, he's only written the one book but it was pretty well done and it kind of reminded me of a cross between JD and Mark Hampton.

bob milek is the reason my first contender was in 35 remington. the reading is great by all of them. some like the big bore revolers and some like the single shots then others like them both cant go wrong!

I found a copy of Handgun Hunting by Major Nonte & Lee Jurras on Ebay got it for 6 bucks I got Monday finished today. GREAT BOOK.

Steve that is a good book. Any book by an author listed above for $10.00 or less is a great buy.
