Day at the range!

Day at the range! - 04/05/2009 11:50 PM

Went to the range today for the first time in 4 months. I spent 4 hours burning some powder and it felt really good. I have several “projects” I have been really wanting to test. Sorry in advance, I don’t have a chrony yet… maybe for Christmas.

My Encore 44 mag (sorry no pictures) was shooting a nice ragged hole at 50 with a 2X Luepy and a 300 XTP over a mid load of 2400. It is a 11in Bullberry full bull barrel. What I find interesting is that the chamber was so tight that I had a hard time loading cast bullets. They didn’t shoot worth beans either. After I saw what Bug did with his 300XTP & 2400 load I have full confidence in it.

Shot 8 experimental rounds out of my 30 GNR (30-30 AI.) I used some actual 30 GNR data but supplemented most of it with 30-30 AI data I got from Kyode… THANK YOU FOR THE DATA!!!! The best group was 37gr of Varget and a 150gr SST(1 1/8 in group @ 100.) I am anxious to see what it will do next time at the range.

44 SRH after Rod worked on the cylinders. I think I pulled the two flyers but it is still a 2in @ 100 yard group with 6 shots. I can not hold revolvers as steady as I can my TC’s, but I am still learning. 300 XTP over 23gr. of H110 (on the second crimp line.)

I took my two best groups from the last time I took her out and took my time to see what they could do. This is a 3 shot group at 100 yards with a 139 SpBt and 42gr of RL 15.

With the price of 375 bullets I REALLY wanted a cast bullet to shoot. So… I gave it a whirl. I put ever powder I had with a 264gr hard cast gas check bullet and I was just hoping that one would shoot. My efforts paid off with divot ends. A 5 shot group with the 264 hard cast and 25gr of 2400. Two shots on the left and three on the right. A 1 1/16 100 yard group.

I can’t get my 7mmTCU to shoot any better than 2in at 100, but that is the game and I guess it gives me something to tinker with. LOL

wonder how much xtra gr capacity the GNR gains over the AI?....might be slight?

That is all part of the fun of shooting these things--- trying to figure out what works best. Unlike DAN and a few others we do not have a range in the shed so we have to wait weeks even months to get to the range.

I think range days are great days--- much like the first day of Mardi Gras you never know what you might see.

Looks like you got some shooters, TCMan...Great range report! Are you shooting your 30 GNR on a Tender or Encore frame?

KRal, the 30 GNR is on a SS G2 frame. The barrel is 12 ¾ long and has a muzzleloader forearm on it. Reeder’s barrels only have one screw on the front and that was the only one I had that would fit… but I really like the way it holds and shoots with it so I think I am going to leave it on there.

Kyode, I don’t think there is enough difference inbetween the two to merit getting both. The reason I got the 30 GNR was because Reeder had one during his sale and I had been wanting a 30-30 AI for some time. Reeder’s web sight states that there is a little improvement but I don’t know if I will ever really see a difference. LOL.
