Talk me into, or out of this. Ruger blackhawk. - 12/27/2010 5:26 PM

I'm getting the itch for a super blackhawk 4-5/8 .44 mag. I have big hands and was wondering about the hogue rubber single action grips. I think they are ugly as can be, but if they help with my grip I could buy them in wood. I prefer the doubble action hump on the back of my guns. I want this gun to hunt if I could make it more comfortable to shoot. Thanks William.

Do you reload? If so i would look at a Bisley Blackhawk in .45 LC.It will do whatever a .44 can do and then some. The grips may also fit your hand better.I don't think you'll find anyone here that will talk you out of it.

I agree with lefty372, try a bisley. To me it's a way better grip than the standard hawg-leg grip. It handles recoil better and has a more natural point of aim...just my 2 cents.

Hogue makes a nice finger groove grip for the BH's and SBH's that extends the grip for all three fingers. It is also larger so may fit your hand better. I also prefer the Bisley handle and wish they offered a factory model with a 4-5/8" tube.

A coupple years back I sold all of the stuff that didn't make me happy and to keep from having to keep a bunch of ammo and reloading stuff. I kept 44mag as my revolver round and have 3 I'm looking for a strong frame was looking at a redhawk but the trade didn't happen. Not that I shoot all hot rounds I like mild and medium. I was just wondering about the grips I saw a pair or 2 on this sight and couldn't remember whos revolver they were on. This revolver is for shooting and hunting. The wife wants to shoot more this summer and I'm going to try to wear a new gun out this year. and I think the unfluted cylinder with the adjustable sights would be the ticket.

I have a 4 5/8 blackhawk in .45 colt .It came with hogue grips, they are longer and thicker than pacamayr so should fit your hand well. Feel wise I like the pachmayr better, they are easier to get a quick grip on for me. They both handle recoil
well in the .45 with stout loads.I have a Bisley also in .45 and with factory grips it beat hell out of my knuckle.Someone suggested curling the little finger under the grip ,but I want all the fingers I can get on the grip.
I made grips for my Bisley with a filler behind the guard and it solved the problem for me,they are also longer in length.Pics on bragging board.Find someone with both grip styles and try before you buy. I like both with proper grips.

William, If this is what you want, then don't be pursuaded out of it. The .44 magnum is not a 45 Colt, and vice versa. And if you DON'T handload, the .44 mag is the better caliber as far as factory hunting loads available.

As for the Bisley grip, yes I like it also, but I have owned a Super Blackhawk in .44 magnum since they first came out and do fine with the Pachmayrs added...and I have big hands.

I'll echo what Gregg said and add emphasis on the 44 mag if you don't handload. There is very little ammo available for the .45 that is hunting worthy.

I do load for the 44mag, I have a coupple of bullet molds and a 310 gr lee on the way. It's the only revolver that I reload for. I have a good load for a 250gr keith worked up but ran out of my weight checked loads and it's time to cast some more. I should have a lyman 45 on the way in the next week or so. I hope being able to lube just one spot on the bullet will make my completed bullets more consistant in weight. Yes it is a sickness I have and enjoy.

I have very large hands too (Extra large gloves are even a pain to force on.) and I like the Pachmeyer Presentation grips.
I hate the Bisley grip, they beat my knuckle. I find they are also sensitive to how they are held and I can't shoot groups near as good with them.

The old hawg leg grip with the Houges is a sweet shooter. It extends the grip to make it bigger, and fills in the gap behind the trigger gaurd. I had one on my SBH, and it was VERY comfy to shoot. I just couldn't get past the look of that rubber sticking out of my holster. Now my SBH wears the factory wood grips.

I find that the pinky under grip is both comfortable and accurate. You just have to get used to it.

I hook my pinkey under the grip and I can still work the hammer with my thumb without moving my hand much. with my hand like this it puts the end of the grip(sharp part) in the palm of my hand. While I can shot it like this a time or two I'm looking to shoot this one a lot. I feel like if I had a place on the front of the grip for my pinkey, and the sharp part was moved down out of my hand it would be comfortable enough to shoot over and over. I may have to look at a set of pachmeyer grips at the next gunshow, I have a set on my encore pistol while I have only shot it about 10 times. the grip size and hardness of rubber are as nice as my big hands have ever gripped. I was just figuring in well over 140 years or more, a plow handle must have sucked even back then. A big grip at your smallest finger small grip at your biggest.

Minnisotahunter thats the kind of info I was looking for.. Yes it looks ugly, but I have a gun to nice looking to shoot now. I'm wanting to shoot this one to the point of being in the verge of a great shot with it. I like the single action look and I'v spent a little money with the hopes of shrinking my group size By sizing correctly to my gun, and applying lube to only to the lube grooves and tinkering a little more with the powder. Thanks all for the help.

Thats the key no matter which grip style you choose.

I think you will really like the Houges. Plus they are cheap. Good luck

+ 1 for the 44. ya cant buy 45lc hunting ammo just anywhere. as for grip frames, i dont care for the bisley. but then ive been shooting the xr3-red for so long the the that the super black hawk frame feels a bit odd. stay with the 44 and try everything that you can get your hands on.
