Finally got around to trying a scope on a handgun. The right ammo = win! Cheap short eye relief (which I like) rimfire scope I had laying around just to try it out. Considerable parallax @ 50 and 25yds. 12 rounds each target, 22 magnum. Somehow didn't get a pic of the Remington accutips, they didn't do to well either. 2" with two fliers = 3"

SS, Getting back into a ss in 22LR/MAG but do not know what ammo to use. Want to go for Coyotes at 50 to 75 yards in 22 MAG. Please advise what I should use... JHP, SHP, FMJ and weight 30, 40, 50 gr or others, and CCI, Remington, etc? Thanks, Mike

Its hard to get 22mags to group well out of a single six. What most don't realize is that the 22 long rifle is a smaller diameter bullet than the mag. The mag is the same as a 22 centerfire at .224 and the long rifle and it's smaller cousins are .220. The last group you have there is actually better than what I've seen out of alot of 22lr/22mag guns.

wapitrod,
I'd greatly appreciate your advise on what round out of a SS w/ 6 1/2" barrel for Coyotes... at 50 to 75 yards for both the 22LR & 22 MAG?
Thanks, Mike

Mike, I'd only use mag for yotes. Use whatever shoots the most accurately. The only way to find out what's best for yours is to try 'em out. CCI has a good reputation, but didn't shoot very well out of mine. The 40 grain softpoint Winchester Super X in the gray box did. The winchester supreme 30 gr HP was horrible for accuracy, but it's very destructive in my experience and from what I've read. Remongton AccuTips weren't very accurate in mine but also have a good reputation.
I think my Six might be a bit more accurate than the norm based on my experience and the previous owner's. Like wapiti said, that last group is pretty good. It's a keeper for sure.
Something else that's fun and useful that I haven't done yet but plan to is to number your chambers and see which shoot the most accurately. I wouldn't be surprised if my 2 fliers came from the same chamber.

like singe six said it's trial and error for your gun. I've taken one coyote with a 22 and it was the LR and I was using CCI mini mag solids with my Henry Golden boy. I don't do alot of small game hunting but most of my pest control which includes coons, feral cats, nutria and possums have most if not all been taken with rifle and the Henry has handled all of it since I got it. I did cleanly kill a large possum at about 90 yds with the Henry and the Mini Mag HP's. I've used my single six's and my pos Heritage on dozens of rattlers, a couple coons, tons of ground squirrels, rock chucks and even some grouse. I found the CCI and Federal ammo worked best in my guns and had less duds than Remington or Winchester. In fact I have about 8 bricks of the Federal HP's I bought for my kids and plinking and I've had almost no duds but here a while back I bought a brick of Winchester because they were on sale. I took my daughter shooting the other day and out of two 15rd and one 7 rd mag for my Marlin only about 5 fired. I figured it had to be the gun so I got out her single shot. I tried to fire about a dozen of the duds and not one would go off and the rims were smashed. As far as mag ammo I honestly havn't messed with a mag since they've come out with the new polymer tipped ammo. When I was still shooting them I found the CCI Maxi Mags worked best. I can't say for your gun but I can say every rimfire I've had has either done the best with CCI or the CCI was a close runner up. My personal thoughts on LR ammo for yotes would be solids, I've actually seen them ricochet around inside of critters tearing things up whereas with a hollow point you risk cratering and not penetrating enough. The mags I honestly haven't shot enough at game to have a credible opinion. Good luck and if you get one take pics!

Just for example about different guns liking different ammo, I generally use Fed LR in my Six as well and it works pretty good. I picked up a Marlin model 60 rifle for my wife n' kids a while back. Finally took it out to play with it and it was shooting 3-4"+ at 50 yards with Fed, CCI, and something else. Horrible. Some Winchester took it right down to 2" or so. I've read 60s will shoot down to 1/2"@50, so I have more fiddling to do.

I've got an old model 60 with the detachable magazine not the tubular and it shoots the feds good. It will do .5" at 50 without a problem and one ragged hole at 25.

That last group is a winner.I'm going to shoot some of the Winchester 40gr. hollowpoints through my .22 mag. cylinder and see how they group.Out of my Mossberg "Chuckster"they seem to group tighter than the super speed ammo.

Mine is a tubular, newer, stainless Sure wish mine would group that well. Need to shoot it more. Took off the cheap AIM scope that came on it, put the less cheap Bushnell on it that came on my Savage .223 since I'm putting a Hawke on the Sav. We'll see.

I got a Jackrabbit (only one I saw) offhand at 25 and 3 ground squirrels at around 50 yards rested today. Not too bad, but I'd like even more accuracy.

Just keep trying different brands and bullet weights and even different lot#'s. Just like the Winchester stuff I talked about, I've shot it before without problems and so have others but this last brick was running 70% duds which I've never come across before.

When i get a batch of .22 ammo that shoots real well i put aside a hundred rounds or so just for hunting. nothing worse than stopping on way out for ammo that won't shoot. Eying up that single six hunter ss, have a smith 2x scope that needs a home. Will the ss reach out further with the mags. S

Your range will be increased with the 22mags but the issue is whether or not you can get them to shoot accurately out of a SS for the reasons talked about earlier.
