Just how effective are the CCI shotshells. Would like to bird hunt with blackhawk .357. Leave the shot gun for after the leaves drop. Will they harm my pistol and what kind of range? Spose i'll pick up a box and start out close and work my way back. Good years up here all you need is a wrist rocket and a bag full of white marbles.

You will have to get real close. I wouldn't even consider it. Get a Contender and a 45/410 barrel if you want to kill game birds with a handgun.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

X4 the cci shells were designed for snakes and they work great 5 or 6 feet on rattlers.

I haven't used them in a .357 but I have used them in a 45 colt. I am sure there is more shot in the 45 colt. I only ever shot at one grouse with them. It died instantly. I would say the range was about 6-7 yards. Most of the grouse in Alaska were quite dumb and you could walk up to the tree they were in. Most people there use a 22 of some sort. If you are serious you should pattern them and see the effective range.

had the idea 20 years ago. shot six time at a shoe box from about 10 yards. dan wesson 44 mag was fine for ihmsa but not a mark on that shoe box. forget it. years ago there was talk of having a revolver with a smooth bore barrel and strait rifling at the muzzle. sort of a paradox revolver. at least one was made but dont remember much about it.

I’m not sure whether some are referring to spruce grouse as opposed to ruffed grouse or not. I can see you shooting a spruce grouse with birdshot, which is a slightly smaller and darker bird than a ruffed grouse. The spruce grouse is also known as Canadian grouse or fool’s grouse, as they are dumber than dog dukie.
If you going after ruffed grouse with a 357 with birdshot; good luck with that idea. There’s not many mature ruffed grouse that will let you get very close with the exception of the male when he’s drumming. I think you would be better off using a 38 wadcutter and go for a head shot.
If you’re going after the spruce grouse, all you need is a wrist rocket and a bag of marbles but it’s a little different with ruffed grouse. In Northern Minnesota they have both species and when I hunted around the Brimson area (north of two harbors) the spruce grouse was a State protected bird.

I hunt Ruffed Grouse with a pair of pointing dogs and the shots I get are normally 20 yards away at a fast moving bird in thick cover. You are not going to hit a bird with a handgun at that range with bird shot. I do know of folks that hunt them with a 22 while walking the logging roads but even then the shots are to far away for what you are asking.
Spruce Grouse are in most states a protected species
