You should be able to get another 100-150 fps out of the cast bullets. It might take a powder change though.

That has to be a thumper. I have used IMR 4227 in my 44 but it left unburned powder in the barrel. I thought it was a little too much thump for the round I was shooting. It seemed to have a more disconcerting recoil than Blue Dot which was close in burn rate so I went with it. e I have shot some H-110 that seems to be the cats, you know, for the full house loads. For some reason it is a more pleasant recoil to me. All that being said, I am recoil and muzzel blast sensitive so I am surely not one to go by. As for sure comfort of shooting full house loads and not saying anything about accuracy the H-110 is hard to beat.

7.9 gr of Green Dot with any 240 gr slug is my target round and if I can shoot specials a lighter load still of Green Dot is even better.

'dude -they seem a little slow to me. I've been loading H-110 and an old lot of 2400 with great success!! I've been getting 1150 with the XTP's and even a little more from Sierra's. My 285 LCSWC are at almost 1300 and still don't show extraction problems, however, I did have a real hot batch that I had to use a wood dowel and plastic hammer to pound them from the cylinder. That was disconcerting for me after the first cylinder! They were fast, but did not group well!! I can attest to the strength of the SBH Hunter!! Naturally, I backed off the charge and pulled the remaining loaded rounds and dropped the charge. It's amazing to me how fast pressure can escalate!

20.5 gr of H110 & a 325 hasrd cast bullet(safe in MY gun) gets me 1346 out of an 8&3/8 barrel, but I'm not sure why we're all assuming you're looking for more velocity.
Sounds like a fun load to me.

I agree Vance, but There are better, lighter recoiling loads to shoot in a .44? I just figure that someone loads a 300gr+ bullet, they mean business. I know, I know, I shoot a lot of 44 specials from mine because they are fun, its just that I read his note as trying to optimize it for big game? Reading the 'Dudes other strings, he is serious about his handgun hunting and loads. Anyway...I have a load that almost duplicates your load and have shot it for years.

You're right Elkhunter. The only time I load up the 300+ grn'rs is when I'm looking for a heavy hunting load. They're too expensive to shoot much otherwise! I prefer to plink with cheap(er)240's at mid-velocities & then shoot a couple of cylinders of the heavy loads to finish off the session.
And you are also right in that most of us are looking for top-end loads when we post here. It is a hunting forum.
Are you using H110 in your heavy load? I want to try Lil' Gun sometime, but have been so pleased with H110 that I haven't bothered.

Oops Elkhunter.
I just re-read you post 2 posts back & I see you are using H110.
It must be bed time. That's the nice thing about being in AK. I usually get the last word(make that get to stick my foot in my mouth last ) for the night.

Vance, how's it taste? I've chewed on mine once or twice or so. In fact, I've done it so many times, I look forward to the snack!!! I haven't tried Lil Gun, but only because I have so much H110 and Varget around I can't afford not to use it. I want to go back to my 18-1/2" Katahdin 444 and load some heavy 300-350 and play with that some more. There is nothing like a big fat slug to stop a critter. Unfortunately, here in PA, I kill more paper and milk jugs in a given year than anything else. There are a few of us that take our 44 and 444/45-70 out for chucks and only take shots over 150yd to make it sporting. The absolute best kill ever was a chuck hiding under behind my uncles JUNKed 56 Ford left front wheel. My 275gr hard cast (pure linotype)over 20 gr 2400 shot through the wheel, not tire, cut the chuck in half and flattened the opposite tire. What a hoot that day was!! There is nothing like the penetration of the big slugs!!! Today, that old Ford now looks like the Bonnie and Clyde were killed in.

I'll try some more H-4227 and some more H-110 to see if I can get velocity up some. But, the 300gr CP's with 19.0grs of H-4227 sure shoot's nice @ 50 yards!

you might try an old keith load i found, which is 21.5gr of w296 behind a 320gr cast performance wlngc. I shoot this in my s&w629 and my sbh and get good accuracy and 1325 to 1350 on the chrono.

Encoredude...That's a great group @ 50 yards...I can only hope to group that well with my SBH Hunter...It looks good too. I can't wait to get into reloading so I can experiment as well...Until then I'll be happy to read others trials and tribulations.
