The 510 Hunter from Gary Reeder came today. It is supposed to sling a .511 435 gr cast performance wfngc at 1200 fps. The gun is going to be featured in an upcoming article from John Taffin in either Guns Magazine or American Handgunner I cannot remember.

That is a beautiful piece!!
That should be plenty of gun for those big Carolina bears I saw inthe article in the print magazine.
Enjoy!

That is very nice. Be sure to keep up informed on the performance. I would like to have something like that but will have to stick with my 45LC until my ship comes in.

Nice,but if that is a cannon what is a S&W 500 Mag or a 500 Linebaugh? Or maybe a 50 Alaskan or maybe a 458 Mag Encore?
Nice gun and should be enough for anything though.
Maybe the others I named are Atomic Bombs or Hydrogen Bombs.

The beauty of this round is that it loads up to the 500 linebaugh and will load down to the 50 AE. So that means it is not behind the 500smith by much plus its portable.

Builder, that is awesome. Launching a slug like that should be no problem from a revolver. It will kill anyhting you shoot it at. My .500 S&W Nuclear Device throws the the 440gr GSLSWC at an honest, chrono'd 1675fps with 38gr H110, and 42gr under a 350 Hornady zips 'em at 1750fps. Big slugs equals big smiles and huge cool factor!!

1675fps is smoking. My bullets and brass haven't came yet so I am anxious to see just what the 510 GNR wil chrono. The load I will be using is 32 gr of H 4227.

NICE GUN!!!!did you see the picture of gary's personal 510 he took to alaska, it's on his website, apparently he was close quarters with a black bear so his gun is covered in blood, but it sounds like it was more than adequate power for a black bear and probably anything else that walks the planet. as for nuclear guns that would be a 500 maximum on a single action platform.

I am going with Gary in April to Africa so I cannot wait to get the whole story about that. From what I gather he was about 20 feet away when he shot it the first time. The 510 is plenty of gun but murphy's law always prevails.

Bullets will be here next week. I planning a big session at the range with some .475 linebaugh, 44 mag and the 510GNR. Sorry for the suspence but if anybody feels like overnighting me some of Cast Performance's .511 435gr wfngc I will gladly dance at their next wedding and let you know how they shoot to boot.

Just shot the 510 hunter today accuracy was great. The cast performance 435 lfngc chronographed the fastest at 1287 and the slowest at 1264fps hell for stout I think.

Wapitirod,

yes I am going to take the 510. I feel pretty comfortable with it. I am also taking one of his 378GNR contenders and one of those long things in 375H&H

Builder, I'd say you were ready for just about any African game. Are you planning on trying a Cape Buffalo with the 510GNR? I'd sure be interested to know how it does on game. Maybe an article with pictures when you get back would be real nice. Have a good hunt.

you know even though all of us here are partial to short barrels you shouldn't be ashamed to pull out the long guns, after all I'd be lost if I couldn't shoot rodents with my ruger #1 in 458 Lott.

ccdhowell,

Since this is my first time to Africa I do not want to hunt dangerous game plus I cannot afford it either. I plan to take some of the big name plains game(kudu, gemsbok, etc.).
I will be glad to write an article if everybody can put up with my mountain grammer and dialect.

As for being ashamed of rifles I'm not but after using handguns I think they can be overkill. If I was going after dangerous game w/ a handgun I would be more than happy if the ph had a rifle just in case.
