I have an older Magnum Research BFR in 454. I recently ordered a mount for a BFR and it is a no go. What mount should I look for? I am thinking red dot sight. It would appear that ultradot is the way to go. I think I will need to have at least two holes drilled and tapped to do this. Any ideas on the proper mount? My local gunsmith is a good guy and can do what I ask. Even if he rolls his eyes! I suspect the mount I received from edge products were from newer BFR's. Ideas? Thank you in advance. Mingokid.

Isn't DMax built on a Ruger? If so, get the Weigand for the Rugers:

The D&T is an easy DIY if you are at all handy.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

yep the Ruger blackhawk mount will work and although I haven't actually looked at one yet the new BFR mount would probably work. I had the Leupold dual dovetail blackhawk mount on my
45-70 BFR but you only get two rings that way and I didn't like how it set back on the frame.

Can the drill and tap be done with a drill press? Or is a lathe the only way to go? Mingokid.

It can be done with a drill press. I found that the part that fits in the rear sight slot is not deep enough to reach to the bottom of the slot on my DMAX. That is with the Weigand base.

if you run into a problem like that you can shim the base. I have .002" shims but you can actually just use a pop can and cut shims and then drill or punch a hole in them. On Ruger frames I've actually had to shim the front of the mount, especially with red dots because of the limited vertical adjustment. The lack of "ears" on the D Max/BFR frame should make that a non issue though.

Weigand now has a base for the older BFRs. I ordered one this week and when I get it I'll let you know if you haven't found something yet.
