I have seen rigs such as freedom arms with very slick very "fitting looking" reflex dot setups. I have a Ruger Bisley 45 colt and the mount bases I have seen were rather...well...unsightly (pun intended). Is there a method to mounting a reflex such as a fastfire III on a Blackhawk such as mine without the base sticking out 47 inches, ya know something nice and clean.

BTW I am happy with my open sites but I looked at a browning buckmark today with an integrated fastfire on it. Man it was cleaner than a bottle of Clorox. I really liked that set up

I have one of those "unsightly" bases and it doesn't bother me, but I know what you mean. One advantage of them is the ability to swap optics:

yes I understand, and your rig is really nice. It seems like someone could offer that base in half the length and smoothed up a bit.

I may not do anything but I am exploring my options. In the least couldn't you grind off the last 40%, smooth it up, and reblue.

Something more integrated into the firearm would be really slick though.

I have cut many bases, and all that is needed to cover the damage is a Birchwood Casey paint pen. I have left this one as is, as it serves a purpose.

I do have a Blackhawk mount from JPoint that installs in place of the rear sight and would get the sight a bit lower, but I have yet to try it. Need another gun....

Mounting Solutions Plus:

Science,

Does not look like a dumb question. It looks like mounts for mini's and single actions are a little thin. The link above has some, but not sure any would be correct.

I think the issue is the machining that is needed to fit the rear sight channel and perhaps poularity. I have one of the FA made bases for my 454, and it very small and slick. Everyone seems to like the Weaver/Pic. base these days, and like you noted are tall. Even withing that design, some are much higher than others. The JP Weaver base for the sight is quite a bit shorter than the Leupold base. But both of these require a rail, that you are lacking.

I have some pictures in the gallery here of my setup that I am using now. I slimmed down an SSK weaver mount so I can go red or scope. Perhaps SSK has a rail for your gun? It looks like Rod may be a good source right now, if you can talk him into it. He's on a roll right now reddotting his guns, so methinks a good time to bend his ear. Or try and figure out if any of the discontinued models may work, and can be found used?

As Bearbait eluded too JPoint discontinued their Ruger single action bases. I am currently playing with a custom base made from a Weigand Weaver style scope base. The logic behind this is two fold. First I'm not a CNC shop so it cuts way down on my machining time and second the mounting holes are the same as the scope base so once the gun is drilled for one then the other will fit. I could have shrunk it a little more but one of the complaints I heard about the factory JPoint mount was the single screw mount was not enough to hold against the recoil of the true heavyweights. There is a thread with pics on this forum further down showing my prototype. It is something I'm willing to do for customers once I'm finished testing this one. I would have already done that but I'm in the middle of dealing with a family emergency so it will have to wait a little longer.

If someone has a sight other than the JPoint I would be willing to see what I could do but would need a shim or the sight ahead to time to make a template, it would basicly be similar to the JPoint sight I've already built.

Rod, Good deal keep us informed with your progress please. I am only shooting 45 colt 300ish at 1100ish so I am within the tame recoil category compared with some you folks. I'm fine with that, it kills the critters I am after pretty dead.

Radominator is that the original J point Ruger single action base?

I have one of those, came with an Optima2000 I bought used. I'd trade it for the same type of base that fits a standard 1911 dovetail.

The base I used on my Ruger Blackhawk was a JPoint made for Ruger double action revolvers. The top strap on Ruger single-action and double-action revolvers is the same if they have adjustable sights.
This is the reply I received from Dave Cammack, Technical Support and Quality Control Engineers at JPoint when I inquired as to which base to use: "Our mount fits in place of the factory adjustable rear sight, and all of the Ruger Revolvers with the adjustable rear sight share the same sight mount so it will fit fine."
