Neither. The 480R is not a big kicker, especially in the heavy Encore platform. That said, the best bang for buck in brakes is the one made by Ross Schuler.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I might invest in some Pachmayr Decelerator's though.

I might invest in some Pachmayr Decelerator's though. They would be worth a try. If they don't giterdun you could get most of your investment back, without altering the gun.

What did you decide? I would go with the Arrestor and Pachy grips. Personally I find the recoil of both the Encore and the Contender objectionable w/o some type of recoil reduction.

If you will primarily shooting cast bullets, Magnaporting is a better choice. My SRH has been ported with MNP's Deal Traps configuration, and it does a good job controlling the muzzle flip.

If you are going to do one or the other of the two mentioned, I'd go with the arrestor break on that size diameter barrel. In the smaller OD barrels, I think the fish gill sort of looks out of place. Haven't seen one on a short standard caliber though so it may look pretty good. I had the arrestor on my 375-06 JDJ and it works wonderfully! Lots of blast but that is going to be the case no matter which you choose. My 50 Alaskan was ordered with the Gill brake but that barrel OD is much larger to my eye than the 375-06 so it looks like it fits if that makes any sense...As far as the grip, the frame in the pics below has the magnum series of the Packy grip. They helped with the long reach for the trigger also for me and handle the recoil nicely. The 375-06 JDJ The 50 Alaskan
