Does anyone have any data for super lightweight 45 colt? I have seen 180 grain loads but they were loaded with trail boss as a cowboy load. I'm talking about something in the 180 grain range that really screams out of a blackhawk. This would not be for big game obviously, just more of a "what if".

The .45 Blackhawks are not well suited to shooitng 180grs fast. However if you have a convertable cylinder .45 ACP you can use .45 Super brass and loading data in it, and depending on barrel length get 185grs as high as 1500fps. I know there are some smiths reaming these cylinders to .460 ROwland but the jury is still out on them as far as I am concerned. You are talking about 40K PSI. AS far as I know there hasn't been the first problem with them though. Out of a 6" auto set up for the .460 185grs can get right at 1700fps. reflex264

What are we attempting to achieve with this exercise?

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

My neighbor shoots cowboy action and he uses a 160 cast bullet over a few grains if little gun I believe.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

In my experience the less than slippery ballistic coefficient of a blunt nosed lightweight large caliber bullet doen't make for an efficient long range proposition. Extended range would seem to be the genesis for shooting light bullets fast but a lightweight 45 Colt wouldn't be my choice of tool for the job, and I love me some 45 Colt.

I should add that I have shot some game with 185gr .451 bullets at 1250fps. ON anything other than deer this bullet would be iffy at best. If you already have a .45 Blackhawk the 300gr XTP just gets it done and done consistently. It will end to end through mist deer at 100 yards when launched 1200fps. It is also plenty for hogs. By your descriptions of "that really screams out of a blackhawk" I assumed you were thinking coyotes possibly. reflex264

I could see that.

That's why I was wondering about the intent. A lot of folks equate rifle-speak to pistols when new to handgun hunting, lighter/faster/flatter/better. Truth is, these fat slugs work just the opposite. Hard to make a Ferrari out of an F150 :-)

I am mostly just asking out of curiosity rather than any real practical purpose. Coyotes perhaps. I am already quite happy with 21 grains of WW 296 and the 300gr XTP in starline brass. What got me thinking about it is all the new super lightweight and fast pistol loads. I know they are gimicky but the idea intrigues me. Get some super light 45 cal bullets and a faster powder. Not sure how well the brass would like it but like I said this is more of a novelty with no true purpose. Like loading round balls in the 45-70. No real purpose just kinda neat to say you did it.

Make no bones about it. Takethe right bullet and amp up the velocity and it can really add to the wound channel

The lightest i have ever shot in the 44 is 160 grainer hollow points that midway bought on a special run from Sierra. They are devastating.i dont believe that you can get them anymore
