Has anyone tried Noslers 300 grain Partition PT bullet in a .45-70? I think this will work for elk, but it might be too hard to expand on deer and black bear. Any other suggestions? Also, has anyone been using Reloader 7 or H4895 in a .45-70? They both look like they keep the pressure levels low, but I don't know if they will burn well in a short barrel. Any other powder suggestions?

I use the 300gr sierra hp with 46 grs of RE#7, fed 210 primers, this load in very accurate in my contender. My barrel is the super 16" with muzzle brake. I also shoot the 350gr Berry bullets with H4189 powder. I have not tried 4895 powder

300 grain Hoenaday's HP with Rl 7 works great in my 14" Hunter model.

I have used .45/70 with the factory 300 grain winchester partition gold load. I used it in a marlin guide gun at 97 yards to harvest a nice 6X5 elk last year. One shot and it got sick, walked a few steps and dropped to the ground. I have also shot 3 200+ pound boar with that load and it worked very well, the boar all ran a 20-40 yards with one shot each to the vitals. The shots on each boar was less than 30 yards. That was all done last year too! The shots on the elk and boar all expanded well and penetrated all the way through the vitals and out the other side. I do not handload, but thought you might find this information of use.

Thanks for the information. I was not sure if the Partition would expand on mule deer size game, but it sounds like they will work.

I use reloader 7 with Hornaday XP 300 in a 14" Contender with good accuracy and lots of punch. My (guess) is that the Partitions may be constructed with heavier jackets for rifle use on big critters and may not expand on deer esp at handgun velocities.
Hornaday just announced a flexible polimer tipped bullet for lever guns. Supposedly has it all over the FP's for balistic coefficient resulting in much flatter(relatively speaking) trajectory. Saw it a recent gun rag ("Rifle"?). May be something you want to check out if you're going to shoot mulies with your big bore at any distance.

I talked to a tech at Nosler who said the Partition will expand at 800 FPS. I think they will cover hunts when I have both deer and elk tags. If I am only after deer I will use a 300 gr. HP. I look forward to trying the new Hornady ammo. I hope they offer the bullet in the future for reloading.

something just for your info, partition handgun and 45-70 bullets are made by winchester and nosler purchases these bullets from them, i'm sure the tech info. is correct I just thought you guys might find it interesting.
