Just wondering what everybody is doing this year. Any big hunting trips planned? I know some state you have to apply for the tags ahead of time. So, where are you going? For me it will be the same. Charlies all summer. The annual early bear hunt in the HA-DE-RON-DAH Wilderness area. It's more of a long day hike than anything. But it's quality time in the woods. The area is beautiful, and if your are lucky you will see a bear. We saw one 2 years but he was too small to shoot. Then deer in the fall at my brothers place, and my uncle's farm. Here are a few pics of last years hunt area. Just to get everybody in the mood and thinking about the up and coming hunts. This was the first pond we made it to at 2 miles back in. The tall rock peak is kind of covered with fog. It's about 1 mile back in further right over the second pond. It rained all day long so the salamander were out all over. This is a look at the spill way from the second pond right under the rock peak, which would be off to the right. This is where the trail ran out. I circled both pond and came back in at the trail head. That way around was really hard going. I'm glad I'm a pistol hunter and had the 480 in a cross draw holster under my rain poncho. The going at times was both feet and hands to climb over fallen trees and rock as big as a house. A rifle would have been a real chore to tote around. A real close estimate is about 7 miles of hiking. 2 miles in, 3 miles around both ponds and 2 miles back out.

That is absolutely beautiful country Tig--I do the early bear in the Adirondacks Limekiln/Moose River area. Turns out mostly being a 3-4 day wilderness campout but I was fortunate to see a nice bear 4 years ago but got winded trying to position for a better shot. Shawn and I been talking about huntin So.Ohio. I hunted an area there for 10 years when I lived in Ohio, all public land and some of the deepest bottoms youve ever seen. Your welcome to join us if interested. Ill probably be huntin Nebraska, Ohio, Texas, maybe Michigans UP if Im invited again. Was hoping to hook up with Tad up in Northern Cal for a Hog Bowhunt. Till then its Groundpigs, waterjugs, bowling pins and whatever else I can scrounge up.

Looks like beautiful country Tigger!
I'll be sticking around here this year, & trying a new "local" area for moose. It's a wilderness area, & I'll be bow hunting (early season, Aug. 10-17) with a friend that's coming up from Mich.
We will canoe in through a system of 8 lakes, & hunt the 8th & 9th lakes in that chain. There are 8 portages to get there, so we should have it to ourselves If we do happen to get moose there is an easier way out (only a couple of portages), but involves 20 miles of gentle down river coming out of one lake so that kind of makes it a one way. I'll be watching for black bear on the same trip. If I don't get a moose with the longbow, & the area looks promising,I'll be back in there come gun season with a handgun.
Also local for black bear (season never closes, two per year), & I'll put in for some local drawing hunts for goat, sheep, & maybe moose. If they open up brown bear for permit hunt in the fall(depends on how many are killed throught the summer by cars, in defence of life or property, etc. I think they go for 12 killed per year os close to that)I may try that with the Contender in .444 Marlin.

If I hit the draw it will be deer and elk in eastern oregon otherwise blacktails in western oregon and elk here at the coast and of course bear and cougar wherever I'm at, we have no shortage of latter two here, it is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. We used to be able to bait bears here but now you can't even use attractant scents. PETA SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to set down and think about this one. During the summer, PDogs, Coyotes, Squrlz around here in Oklahoma. If my luck is good, I put in for Tradtional Archery tag in southern Oklahoma on the McAlester Ammunition Depot which is like hitting the lottery around here. 20,000+ acres of Whitetail management area for Longbow, Recurve, Selfbow only. That will be in Nov. Going to Colorado for Elk with longbow in Sept. October brings whitetail season with the old flintlock smokepole and longbow. Also I applied for a buck longbow tag in Kansas for Oct thru Jan. In October if I don't score an Elk with the longbow in Sept, I might go back to CO with my 338JDJ and hunt the second gun season for a cow elk over the counter tag. November will be pistol hunting for whitetail in Oklahoma using my 338JDJ#2, Ruger Hunter 45LC, and maybe my Ruger 41 Mag Hunter. Also during the fall I hunt hogs that seem to find my foodplots and the neighbors cut corn areas. December it's back to whitetail longbow hunting. Oh, almost forgot, the fall turkey season we can use handguns in certain parts of the state and I will be out there in NW Oklahoma with my new 222 Rem. Mag XP100 and Burris 3x12 BPlex looking for a big gobbler. I applied for a once in a lifetime Elk tag in SW Oklahoma. The only thing about this is you can only use a la-la-la longgun. Some people here on Oklhoma are from the old school when rifles where the only thing that would kill an elk. I have argued the handgun issue with our wildlife dept and the group that controls the hunts but with no changes. I will just take the old blackpowder cartridge Sharps 45-70. This is a lot of hunitng when you put it down on paper. I have to do a lot of "Honey Do's" to get away with hunting this much. I wish all of you good huting and keep your powder dry.

Locally (Kansas) I will hunt deer with both of my kids. My son is old enough this year to hunt deer I have put in for a mulie buck and a cow tag in SW COlorado. About a month from now I should know. Should get teh cow tag, but will likley get a preference point for the buck. Taking the 7 Dakota to the mountains, as range should not be much of an issue if I do my part right. Locally, I will use several differnt SP's.

Well guys, first it's chucks and such here in Pa, then it looks a Colorado Archery Elk, fly fishing trip in September, Black Bear in Maine, Moose in New Brunswick, and then a late season deer hunt in Alabama and Georgia. Mixed in will be a fall turkey hunt in New York and late season Pheasant hunt in the Dakota's - all on OLN of course! Gotcha! For me, it really is the Pa chucks and Colorado trip for my sons HS graduation, and then just the typical Pa deer hunt with about 11 straight weeks of turkey and waterfowl. Nio big Elk trip this year, but wait till next year!

GREAT Pictures guys!!
I’m not sure what the future will hold. I will be hunting one way or another. I started hunting about twenty years ago with a high school buddy, his dad and uncles. About two years after college he moved to Ohio. I continued hunting with the group and we all became great friends. He comes back thanksgiving week ever year and we hunt Friday Saturday and Sunday. Well big mike is retiring in June. His wife wants to move out to Ohio to be closer to the grandkids. I think the others may be hanging up the hunting now that big mike is moving out with his son. Most of them are in or near 70 and the mountains are getting to be a bit much. A few years back I started doing some hunting with my father in-law. My brother started hunting with me last year. My son is old enough to bow hunt this year and rifle next. I’m gunna miss my “old buddies” but look forward to the new crew

Hey Ernie, I am really jealous of you and your friends -WOW- 4 or 5 guys who hunt with handguns! I have trouble finding 4 guys who can leave thier egos at home and get along, let alone hunt with handguns. I am taboo in my local circle. Everytime you try and either show a trophy or talk about a handgun hunt, everythhing just gets brushed aside as pure luck! I write them off as yuppie idiots. Everybody here needs a big magnum rifle with total disregard for practice and honing hunting and shooting skill. Almost none of my 'friends' could do a 7-day back-pack or wilderness hunt either. If it's not within site of camp or truck, its too far!

I'm pretty much in the same boat Gerry. I spend 95% of my hunting time hunting alone because there is nobody around that has the same hunting desires I do. They are more than willing to ride around on back-roads with the ultra-mag, might even walk down an old seismic trail for a couple hundred yards, but that's it. Guess that's why a friend is coming up from Mich. to bow hunt with me this year. He will be my 1st hunting partner since we moved back to Alaska 4 yrs ago. In the 10 yrs I lived here before that I only hunted with 3 other people for a total of 4 hunts. I wouldn't particularly want to hunt with any of them again.

thank you for the warm welcome.I just dated my t/c contender and it was made in 1969.it came out of a estate sale in dallas.I would bet unfired.I just ordered a new super 14 44 mag barrel and have a 10 inch bull 357 mag barrel as well. where I hunt shots are under 100 yards and I am pretty sure the 44 mag will be fine. pete

Just got back from a 3 day turkey hunt in the southern part of my state (VT). Only other hunting I will do this year is on my own property for deer. 100 acres with 40 of it planted in clover/alfalfa/rye by a local farmer for cow hay. Seems the deer have not got the memo that its for the cows and to leave it alone. LOL
Thanks, Shawn

Back to WY for the 20th anniversary HHI Antelope Hunt. Then all the usual he in OR, deer, bear and maybe elk. I'll be mixing up muzzel loading, archery and pistols as far my hunting weapons go. It will depend on the draw. I just bought a duck club so I'll be there too! Bill in Bend, OR

Hey Bill, How's Bend, it go to be too much like a combination of Portland and Tijuana for me so I bailed to the coast The californians can have it, I just hope there all still there when the mountain blows then I might come back, until then I get to see wild elk herds in the hundreds every day and I've got clean air and there not trying raise taxes everytime one of there brainiac cops stubs a toe, (by the way did you guys get screwed with that 6% property tax increase with the fine print that says the sherrifs office no longer has to go the voters for approval?)

No special plans this year. Just chuck hunting this summer(if it ever quits raining. Then archery deer. Gun deer and ML deer. Throw in a couple of jaunts out to hunt squirrels and that about covers it. Now for next year, I plan to take myself to Kansas for my 50th birthday present to myself. I can't wait.

I took a nice Oklahoma gobbler with my Remington 11-87 last month. (See below for a picture or click here for hunt details.)
I'll be hunting with various weapons throughout the OK deer season. I have apps in for OK and NM pronghorn and elk draws, but if none of those pan out (pretty likely, unfortunately) I may go on an OTC archery elk hunt in CO in Aug/Sep.

I've started out the '06 hunting season pretty well with filling both spring turkey tags at home, and bringing home 2 hogs from Okla. last wknd.
I'll be after groundhogs and yotes in the coming weeks, our firearm and archery deer/turkey hunts here locally, doing a bowhunt in S. TX in Oct. for whitetail, and more than likely another hog hunt or two.
Hopefully have success here this year deer hunting with my 15" Encore 44 mag. Haven't got to hunt with it yet!
